To make it in politics, you have to be sly. This isn’t the first time this liberal has slipped up.
And now a Democrat Congressman is running for the hills after being hit with shocking allegations.
Scandal-Plagued Swalwell Jumps Into Crowded California Governor Race
Embattled California Democrat Eric Swalwell, no stranger to peddling baseless conspiracy theories and dodging ethical firestorms in Congress, is now eyeing a retreat to state politics. On Thursday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Swalwell declared his bid for California governor in next year’s election—timing that conveniently overlaps with a looming Justice Department probe into claims he falsified loan documents for his lavish $1.2 million D.C. home.
Kimmel teed up the reveal by quizzing Swalwell on countering President Donald Trump’s policies, prompting a rambling pitch centered on his home state.
“I’ll tell you what I’m going to do. I love California. It’s the greatest country in the world, greatest country in the world,” Swalwell said. “That’s why it p*sses me off to see Californians running through the fields where they work from ICE agents or troops in our streets.”
“It’s horrifying,” Kimmel said.
Swalwell agreed, adding, “It’s awful to look at, and our state, this great state, needs a fighter and a protector — someone who will bring prices down, lift wages up.”
“We can say that we’re the fourth-largest economy in the world, and we are. I love to brag about that, but what does that mean if we can’t afford to live here?” Swalwell continued. “So I’ve been in these fights as a city councilmember … as a prosecutor in Oakland, and taking on the most corrupt president ever in the U.S. Congress, but I’m ready to bring this fight home. So, I came here tonight to tell you and your audience that I’m running to be the next governor of California.”
The studio crowd gave him a standing ovation, and Swalwell echoed the announcement in a social media video fixated on bashing Trump and vaguely promising affordability fixes—hardly a bold vision for a state grappling with real crises.
Looming Fraud Allegations Shadow Hypocritical Campaign Launch
Swalwell’s gubernatorial ambitions come amid fresh accusations of mortgage and tax fraud, with Trump’s housing chief referring him to Attorney General Pam Bondi just last week.
He whined that it’s all “political retribution,” but reports from the New York Post detail how he allegedly misrepresented his D.C. mansion as his primary residence to snag lucrative loans and refinances. The Daily Wire sought comment from his office on this career pivot, but none was forthcoming.
This latest mess piles onto Swalwell’s checkered history since his 2012 congressional debut, where he became a leading cheerleader for the debunked Russia collusion narrative against Trump. His credibility took another hit over ties to a suspected Chinese spy, raising serious national security red flags that he has never fully addressed.
Overcrowded Democratic Field Highlights Swalwell’s Desperate Bid
Swalwell wades into a packed Democratic primary to succeed the term-limited Gavin Newsom, facing off against heavyweights like ex-Rep. Katie Porter, former HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, ex-L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and billionaire Tom Steyer.
On the Republican flank, former Fox News host Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco are mounting challenges. With his baggage of scandals and failed national stunts, Swalwell’s entry looks more like a bailout from D.C. scrutiny than a genuine shot at leadership.
