Democrats are throwing out all sorts of accusations. They’re clearly desperate.
And the Republican Party has been accused of a disturbing crime according to this leading Democrat.
In a stunning admission on national television, a top Democrat lawmaker laid bare her party’s strategy for the coming elections. On CNN’s The Arena, Rep. Terri Sewell of Alabama didn’t mince words about what Democrats plan to do if they regain power over map-drawing. Their goal isn’t cleaner government or fairer rules—it’s raw political survival through aggressive retaliation.
Sewell made it crystal clear: Democrats have to be victorious in the redistricting fight. Why? Because, in her view, anything less hands Republicans the keys to future victories. This isn’t about good governance. It’s framed as stopping a supposed Republican plot to “steal the next election.”
The congresswoman doubled down without hesitation. “I personally think that we, as Democrats, can’t sit back. We have to fight back. So, if blue states — I mean, red states are going to redraw their maps, I think that Democrats need to think about redrawing their maps. I know it’s a race to the bottom, but it’s a — it’s to the bottom, and you’re fighting fire with fire.”
“And I think it’s important that we win this fight, because it’s about making sure that the Republicans don’t steal the next election. And that’s exactly what they’re doing.”
This is the language of desperation mixed with defiance. Instead of calling for neutral, compact districts that respect communities and keep elections close to the people, Sewell openly embraces a retaliatory mindset.
Blue states should mirror—or exceed—whatever moves red states make. The ends justify the means, even if it drags the entire system into the gutter.
Host Kasie Hunt pressed for specifics. How exactly are Republicans “stealing” elections through redistricting? Sewell’s response revealed the familiar playbook: blame Trump, blame Florida, blame partisan map-drawing in general.
“Well, I think that the redistricting that’s going on in Florida is — this was all started by Donald Trump, by asking Texas to find him five seats. And what you’ve seen is a tit for tat. And I know I personally voted against gerrymandering, not once, but twice, when Democrats were in charge. We voted for the Freedom to Vote Act,” Sewell said.
“But the fact of the matter is, Republicans did not vote for that. They wanted gerrymandering. And what the Supreme Court has allowed them to do is to have partisan gerrymandering, and they can actually draw discriminatory maps and use it as an excuse that they did it for partisan reasons.”
“It’s pretty scary times to live in that we don’t actually protect the rights of protected classes on race, but we allow partisan gerrymandering, and that’s kind of where we are. And I think that the fact that they can not only redraw seats, but now that they can redraw lines, even before elections, is pretty devastating.”
Notice the contradictions. Sewell claims she opposed gerrymandering when her party held the levers of power. Yet now she urges Democrats to dive headfirst into the same fight—redrawing maps aggressively wherever they can. The principle seems flexible depending on who’s in charge.
The real issue for populists isn’t which party draws the lines. It’s that both sides have turned redistricting into a cynical power grab that distances voters from their representatives.
Districts should be drawn to keep neighborhoods together, respect natural boundaries, and prevent the creation of bizarre, snake-like shapes designed purely to pack or crack opposing voters.
Instead, we get endless legal warfare, activist judges, and now open calls for “fighting fire with fire.”
The American people lose every time politicians prioritize partisan advantage over competitive, accountable districts.
