Congress can be full of surprises. You never know what might happen next.
And this Republican senator called it quits in a move that has Capitol Hill in shock.
In a bold move that’s shaking up the political landscape, Senator Steve Daines from Montana has announced he’s stepping away from the Senate, choosing not to run for reelection.
Daines, a Republican, made his announcement in a heartfelt video posted on X, where he opened up about his journey. Before diving into politics, he spent nearly three decades grinding it out in the private sector, building success the old-fashioned way.
But as Daines put it, those years paled in comparison to the satisfaction he found in serving the public. It’s a reminder of what real leadership looks like – putting country over comfort.
“Serving the people of Montana in the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate the past 13 years has been the greatest honor of my professional career,” Daines stated.
“I’m grateful to God for allowing me to serve, but after much careful thought, I’ve decided not to seek reelection.”
Even as he exits the stage, Daines isn’t fading away quietly. He declared he’s fired up and optimistic about what’s ahead, ready to tackle new challenges with the same vigor that defined his time in office.
Looking back, Daines highlighted the massive wins he helped deliver for America. He stood shoulder-to-shoulder with President Donald Trump and fellow senators to reshape the nation’s highest court with a solid conservative backbone.
They flipped the Senate to Republican hands, giving everyday folks a voice against the liberal elite. And let’s not forget the historic tax cuts that put money back in the pockets of hardworking families across the country.
Daines proudly touted how they ramped up American energy production, making the U.S. a powerhouse on that front.
President Trump, never one to mince words, jumped in with high praise for Daines on Truth Social. He called him a standout leader who’s served with distinction.
“Steve Daines, of Montana, is one of our truly Great United States Senators,” Trump said in his post.
“He honorably served for 12 years in the Senate, and 2 in the House of Representatives. He did a job like few others are capable of doing but, sadly for our Country, Steve’s Term is up, and he has decided to leave the Senate and, ‘pass the torch’ to Kurt Alme, my TRUMP 45 and TRUMP 47 U.S. Attorney.”
“In fact, if Kurt didn’t have the highest level of aptitude and talent, Steve would have remained exactly where he is but, Kurt is exceptional, and I will be giving him, based on Steve’s strongest recommendation, my Complete and Total Endorsement.”
