The 2028 election is a little under three years away. But many politicians are already making their preparations for it.
And a 2028 presidential election update has Republicans smashing the panic button.
Gavin Newsom is cozying up to the liberal elite in Hollywood, and it looks like he’s already cashing in on those deep pockets as he eyes the 2028 Democratic nomination.
A big-time producer, who’s been a cash machine for Democrats for years, gushed about him to Deadline: “He’s a fighter, that’s what we need!”
This same insider added, “I just wish more Democrats, like [Chuck] Schumer and the leadership (in Congress), would emulate him, not take any s— from Trump.”
Newsom’s been earning cheers from the left for his aggressive stance against President Trump, constantly jabbing at him online and jumping into podcasts and Substack to spread his message.
He’s also got Hollywood progressives swooning over his push for Prop 50, which California voters approved last month to redraw districts in a way that boosts Democrats and counters what Republicans are doing in places like Texas.
After the victory, Newsom declared, “Donald Trump poked the bear. And the bear roared back.”
One agency bigwig admitted to Deadline, “I’ll admit, I didn’t see it in him, and I’ve met him a number of times, but Newsom has really impressed me the way he’s taken Trump on, the jabs.”
The governor, who’s wrapping up his second term, mentioned back in October that he’d think about a White House bid once the 2026 elections are done.
Even HBO’s Bill Maher, who’s quick to slam Democrats he thinks are too radical, has given Newsom some props.
James Costos, who served as Obama’s ambassador to Spain and worked at HBO, noted that Newsom enjoys “strong enthusiasm” from donors in Los Angeles.
He explained to Deadline, “Big checks are being written,” and went on:
“It was a slow build early on as we recovered from the loss [last] November, but there has been momentum building, No Kings events, legal wins, the [Jimmy] Kimmel effect, resistance growing and it’s turning into clear ways to fight back against the administration’s overreach and organize to win in 2026 and 2028.”
A major donor in the producer world told Deadline that “anyone who really matters” is eager to hop aboard the Newsom express if it starts rolling.
But not everyone’s all in yet—some in the report pointed out it’s way too soon for the 2028 race, and donors might hold back until a clearer frontrunner emerges.
The Democratic field could get packed, with names like Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro, Kentucky’s Andy Beshear, ex-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, New York’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and maybe even Kamala Harris jumping back in.
Harris’s big loss in 2024, coming from her time as California’s senator and then VP, might make party voters wary of handing the nod to another politician from a Leftist state.
