Each party has their safe districts where they are sure they’ll win elections. But something changed this time.
Because a total upset in a deep-blue district left Democrats searching for answers.
In a surprising victory that highlights the importance of character and accountability in politics, Republican Jeannie LaCroix secured a rare upset win in the deep-blue Woodbridge District of Prince William County, flipping a long-held Democratic seat on the Board of Supervisors.
The special election, held on March 10, 2026, to replace Democrat Margaret Franklin (who moved on to the Virginia House of Delegates), saw LaCroix capture 43.7% of the vote, outpacing Democratic nominee Muhammed Sufiyan Casim’s 37.0%.
A significant portion of votes—19.2%—went to write-in candidates, including Democrat Pamela Montgomery, who stepped in after losing the primary amid concerns over Casim’s record.
The turning point came from revelations about Casim’s decade-old social media posts from the 2010s, which included racist, misogynistic, and antisemitic content.
These resurfaced posts sparked bipartisan outrage and calls for him to withdraw, as voters in this diverse area rightly demanded higher standards from candidates.
Casim, a 36-year-old Muslim Pakistani immigrant, issued an apology in an interview with the Prince William Times, stating:
“I wasn’t realizing the cultural weight and the context, so I used that word foolishly, but not in a derogatory or prejudicial way.”
He added that he used the N-word to refer to his black friend and noted, “Back in those days, a lot of kids would use that word both with kids of African American origin and people of any brown ethnicity.”
In a March 2, 2026, X post, Casim wrote: “Hate has no place in Prince William County. Our campaign has been attacked by the political party that elected former Board Chairman Corey Stewart, whose rhetoric has emboldened neo-Nazis. Despite his explanations and refusal to step aside, the controversy fractured Democratic support—evidenced by Montgomery’s write-in effort and statements like hers:
“For Democrats, confronting racism is not optional. It is foundational. When racist language surfaces, especially from someone seeking public office, the response should be clear: acknowledge it, condemn it, and demand accountability.”
Voters ultimately rewarded LaCroix’s campaign with a win in a district that heavily favored Democrats in recent elections, including Kamala Harris’s 18-point margin in 2024.
This outcome during President Trump’s second term shows that even in solidly blue territory, Republicans can prevail when they present a strong, principled alternative and when opponents face legitimate questions about their past conduct and judgment.
