The Left is at their wit’s end. And they are out for blood.
And now a rabid Democrat talk-show host wished starvation on Trump voters and children.
Hostin blames GOP for shutdown, predicts hunger in red states will spur talks
On Monday’s The View, co-host Sunny Hostin laid the blame for the 27-day government shutdown on Republicans, suggesting that hunger among GOP voters in red states could push lawmakers to negotiate a funding deal before Thanksgiving.
The shutdown began when Democrats and Republicans failed to agree on a continuing resolution (CR) to keep federal operations running.
Democrats demand the CR include extended Affordable Care Act subsidies to prevent premium hikes, while Republicans argue these provisions risk covering undocumented immigrants and push for a clean funding bill with healthcare talks to follow.
Hostin called it a “Republican shutdown,” pointing to House Speaker Mike Johnson’s recess decision. “This is a Republican shutdown. This is not a Democratic shutdown,” she said, warning that 42 million Americans face losing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
SNAP benefits at risk as deadline nears
A USDA memo, obtained by Fox News Digital, warns that without new funding, SNAP payments could halt in November, affecting $8 billion in aid for 42 million recipients.
At least 25 states, including red states like Texas and West Virginia and blue states like New York, have signaled disruptions starting Nov. 1. Some Democratic-led states are suing over unspent USDA contingency funds.
Hostin highlighted states like New Mexico, Louisiana, Oregon, and Alabama, where up to 23% of residents rely on SNAP, including children, seniors, and the disabled.
“We are talking about children, the elderly and people with disabilities,” she said, with co-host Whoopi Goldberg adding, “Alabama.”
Hostin’s red-state hunger comment draws fire
Hostin speculated that GOP voter hardship could shift the stalemate: “When those Trump voters start not being able to have Thanksgiving dinner, their children are hungry… I wonder what happens then. Will Republicans finally come back to the table?”
The remark triggered swift criticism on X, with users labeling it “insensitive” for framing suffering as a political lever while ignoring Democrats’ 12 filibusters of GOP funding bills. One user wrote, “Hostin acts like only red states hurt, but blue states are on SNAP too.”
Her past critiques of Trump, tying the shutdown to his stance on Obama’s legacy, fueled perceptions of bias.
With President Trump in Asia until Thursday, no Senate votes are scheduled. Food banks prepare for increased demand, and advocates push for tapping USDA’s $6 billion reserve to avoid cuts.
