A Sunday morning drive to church turned into a frightening ordeal for Rep. Marcy Kaptur, the longest-serving congresswoman in American history, after the vehicle she was riding in was struck by a driver who sped off without stopping.
Congresswoman Recovering, Investigators Chase Leads
Kaptur, 80, was a passenger at the time of the crash and is now “active, alert, and being treated for non-life-threatening injuries,” according to a statement released by her office. Toledo police classified the crash as a “hit-skip,” confirming the at-fault driver left the scene without rendering aid or waiting for authorities. A witness told a local television station that the fleeing driver was picked up by a second vehicle almost immediately after the collision, suggesting the escape may have been planned rather than panicked.
A second, unidentified person was also hospitalized as a result of the crash. By Sunday evening, investigators said they had made “significant” progress toward identifying a suspect, and the Toledo police chief pledged the department remains committed to holding whoever is responsible fully accountable.
In her statement, Kaptur thanked first responders for their swift action. “Congresswoman Kaptur is thankful for the quick actions of first responders from Toledo Police and Fire Departments who arrived promptly on scene, and the medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash,” the statement read, adding that she looks forward to learning more as the investigation progresses.
A Rare Moment of Bipartisan Concern
News of the crash prompted an outpouring of support that crossed party lines. Derek Merrin, the Republican challenger running against Kaptur for her seat this November, said he was saddened to learn of the accident, asking the public to join him in “praying for her speedy recovery and all those injured in the crash.”
Ohio’s Republican U.S. Senator Jon Husted echoed those sentiments, saying he and his wife are also keeping Kaptur in their prayers and expressing hope that the person responsible is “apprehended quickly and held accountable.”
For her part, Kaptur said she was moved by the response from her constituents, telling supporters she was grateful for the “hundreds of constituents who have reached out” in the hours since the crash. She indicated she expects to be back to her full schedule soon.
