Democrats like to play politics. They rarely stand on their own principles.
And now Chuck Schumer is red in the face after being forced to eat his own words.
Trump Administration Captures Maduro in Venezuela Operation
President Donald Trump announced via Truth Social that Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were detained in Caracas during a U.S.-backed law enforcement action supported by American military forces.
Trump later stated at a press conference that the United States would oversee Venezuela’s affairs, with key officials like Marco Rubio, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine taking charge.
Schumer Moves to Invoke War Powers Resolution
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer appeared on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, labeling the operation as unlawful and announcing plans to introduce a War Powers Act resolution.
He described it as “lawlessness” requiring congressional intervention.
“The American people this morning, George, are scratching their heads in wonderment and in fear of what the president’s proposed,” Schumer claimed. “The United States will run Venezuela. We have learned though the years, when America tries to regime change and nation-building in this way, the American people pay the price, in both blood and in dollars.”
Schumer argued the administration lacked authority, noting forces entered Venezuelan territory and struck targets.
“They did not just do ships off the water,” Schumer said. “They went inside Venezuela, bombed civilian as well as military places, and it’s a violation of the law to do what they did without getting the authorization of Congress.”
The resolution, co-sponsored with Tim Kaine and Rand Paul, is privileged and expected on the floor that week. If passed by both chambers, it would bar further actions in Venezuela without congressional approval.
Shift from Earlier Criticism of Trump on Venezuela
In 2020, following Maduro’s indictment on drug trafficking charges, Schumer had taken a different stance, faulting Trump for inaction.
“The President brags about his Venezuela policy? Give us a break. He hasn’t brought an end to the Maduro regime,” Schumer complained then.
Other Democrats criticized the recent operation as an unauthorized conflict, with some figures calling for impeachment.
