Senator Feinstein claimed the title of oldest sitting U.S. Senator in March of 2021. But her reign may soon come to an end.
And Dianne Feinstein’s devastating health emergency has Democrats panicking.
Many in the conservative movement, including Donald Trump and Nikki Haley, have pointed out the aging Democrat Party.
Many high profile Democrats are 80 years old or older, including Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, and Dianne Feinstein.
It has raised questions of whether they are still fit to hold office whether mentally or physically.
And, at least in the case of Dianne Feinstein, we have our answer.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has been absent from Capitol Hill this week, citing a health issue, according to her office.
“The senator is in California this week dealing with a health matter,” a spokesperson for Feinstein told reporters.
“She hopes to return to Washington soon,” the representative added.
No other information was immediately provided.
Feinstein, 89, is the Senate’s oldest member, and her colleagues have expressed concerns about her mental health in recent years.
Feinstein, a member of the Senate since 1994, said last month that she would not run for re-election in 2024.
Reps. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, and Barbara Lee, all prominent House Democrats, have declared campaigns to succeed Feinstein in the Senate.
Another Democrat in the Senate, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, is ailing.
According to his office, Fetterman, who suffered a stroke during his campaign last year, admitted himself into a hospital two weeks ago to obtain therapy for mental depression.
Democrats have 48 senators plus three independents, including Arizona’s Kyrsten Sinema, who recently quit the party. Republicans are the minority party in this Congress, with 49 seats.
If major Democrats are unable to perform their duties due to health concerns, or worse, then there is a very real prospect of special elections being called.
This would throw another wrench in Joe Biden’s agenda moving forward, especially seeing as the Senate confirms or denies his political appointments.
And with the political winds shifting against Biden’s administration, his entire legacy is in jeopardy.
