Security Hire Raises Eyebrows
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) has come under scrutiny after it emerged that her longtime security guard—a man known to her team as Mike King—was actually Diamon-Mazairre Robinson, a fugitive with a lengthy criminal record who was fatally shot by Dallas SWAT during a standoff.
Robinson, who had been part of Crockett’s protection detail for years, including during her unsuccessful Senate campaign, faced federal investigation for impersonating a law enforcement officer at the time of his death.
He possessed multiple weapons, including a stolen one, and used various aliases to infiltrate law enforcement circles while running a business connecting officers to off-duty jobs.
Protocols Claimed, But Questions Linger
Crockett maintains that her office did everything by the book. “Our team followed all protocols outlined by the House to contract additional security,” she stated. She pointed to “loopholes” and “shortcomings in many of our systems” that supposedly allowed Robinson to slip through vetting undetected.
Her team reportedly believed he had legitimate ties to other local entities and even coordinated with Capitol Police.
Yet, despite these assurances, the fact that a wanted individual with a history of theft convictions dating back over a decade—and active warrants—ended up guarding a sitting member of Congress highlights troubling gaps in oversight, especially for someone in such a sensitive role.
Reflections on Redemption and Reality
Crockett expressed sympathy for the man her team knew, noting, “What we’re learning about his past doesn’t fit the person we came to know as Mike King.”
She added, “His death evokes a range of emotions. Our hearts grieve the loss of someone we knew and the lost good that could have come from his redemption.”
As a former public defender, she emphasized belief in second chances.
Still, the incident leaves many wondering whether prioritizing redemption rhetoric over rigorous scrutiny might have played a part in overlooking clear red flags, allowing a deceptive figure to gain trusted access for so long.
