Politics can be incredibly unpredictable. That’s what makes it such a tough profession.
And a sudden retirement in Congress has Washington, D.C. in a frenzy.
In a move that’s shaking up the political landscape in California, Rep. Darrell Issa, the Republican from the Golden State, has declared he’s stepping down at the end of his current term. This comes as his district faces new challenges from last year’s redistricting, which has opened the door for opportunistic Democrats eyeing a flip in the upcoming midterms.
Issa, a veteran fighter in Congress, timed his announcement just after the candidate registration deadline passed.
“This decision has been on my mind for a while, and I didn’t make it lightly,” Issa stated.
“First, we built the right campaign infrastructure, support has been overwhelming — including from President Trump — and our polling was unmistakable: We would win this race. But after a quarter-century in Congress — and before that, a quarter-century in business — it’s the right time for a new chapter and new challenges.”
True to his conservative roots, Issa didn’t just bow out quietly. He’s throwing his full weight behind San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond as his successor.
“For more than two decades, I’ve had the privilege of serving this community — first as a local mayor, then as your County Supervisor,” Desmond stated.
“I’ve fought to keep taxes low, hold government accountable, and protect the quality of life that makes this region so special.”
This endorsement signals a seamless handoff to someone who shares Issa’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and community protection. Desmond’s experience as a mayor and supervisor means he knows how to deliver results without the Washington fluff.
Meanwhile, the Democrats are already popping champagne, thinking they’ve got an easy win. But let’s not kid ourselves—their glee is just another sign of how out of touch they are with real voters.
Anna Elsasser, mouthpiece for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, couldn’t hide her smug satisfaction. She jumped at the chance to sling mud at Issa, ignoring his decades of hard work for the American people.
“After over two decades of disastrous representation, Darrell Issa is once again running for the exits – and good riddance,” Elasser stated.
She didn’t stop there, piling on with the usual leftist talking points. “Issa abandoning his voters now is the clearest sign yet that Republicans know he can’t win on his record of skyrocketing prices, gutting health care, and looking out for himself and wealthy special interests above all else,” she said.
“Any Republican who tries to parachute into this race with the same extreme agenda will face the same fate.”
Democrats like Elsasser can trash-talk all they want, but their “extreme agenda” label is just projection. It’s the left that’s pushing radical policies that hike costs, erode freedoms, and favor special interests over hardworking Americans.
