Local Democratic Party Chair Resigns After Arrest for Stealing Political Signs
In a surprising turn of events, Lowell Simon, the former chair of the Moore County Democratic Party in North Carolina, resigned this week following his arrest for allegedly removing and stealing roadside signs that supported former President Donald Trump. Simon, who is also a candidate for the North Carolina House in the upcoming November elections, faces two counts of misdemeanor larceny related to the political signs.
The Moore County Democratic Party confirmed Simon’s resignation through a Facebook post on Monday, stating, “following recent allegations and arrest related to the theft of political signs.”
According to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy spotted Simon taking down campaign signs along Seven Lakes Drive around 5:25 p.m. on Thursday. The deputy, who was responding to an unrelated call, later visited Simon’s residence, where the stolen signs were discovered in his vehicle. Simon reportedly admitted to removing the signs, which were subsequently returned to their rightful owner.
A warrant for Simon’s arrest was issued on Saturday, and he was released “under a written promise to appear in court.” His first court appearance is scheduled for October 30.
In their Facebook announcement, the Moore County Democratic Party expressed, “While we appreciate the hard work and dedication he has shown to the Democratic Party and the community, the Moore County Democratic Party cannot and will not condone the tampering of political signs or any other illegal activity.” They noted that Simon has offered both an apology for his actions and his resignation, which have been accepted.
In a subsequent interview with WRAL, Simon voiced his frustration over the situation, explaining that the signs he had placed in support of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein were obstructed by newly installed signs promoting Trump. “My worse angels got the better of me and I removed the signs,” Simon said, acknowledging, “I shouldn’t have done that. I didn’t do it in the stealth of night or anything. I did it when it was five o’clock in the afternoon.”
The Moore County Democratic Party emphasized the importance of free expression, stating, “We believe in the importance of freedom of expression and speech, and hope that local law enforcement will continue to enforce such laws that protect those freedoms fairly and without bias across party lines.” They affirmed their commitment to electing Democrats in the upcoming election, supposedly reiterating their dedication to the value of justice.

In light of the incident, Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields, a Republican, issued a reminder that the removal or theft of campaign signs is a violation of North Carolina General Statute § 136-32(e), which protects the lawful placement of these signs during election periods.
North Carolina A Massive Swing State
Democrats are so desperate to win North Carolina because a win there would make it a little more difficult for Donald Trump to win the 270 electoral votes needed to earn a term in the White House.
Not only that, but with Pennsylvania and Wisconsin showing seriously worrying signals for Kamala Harris and the Democrats, they are pulling out all the stops to try and pick off a state from Donald Trump that he’s favored to win, like North Carolina.
Yet, even without North Carolina, all Donald Trump would need to do is flip Pennsylvania red, as he’s currently favored to do, and he will very likely win the election this November. North Carolina is actually more important to Kamala Harris than it is to Donald Trump.
Donald Trump will likely need to win just one of three states to win the Presidential election. Those three being Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. If he wins Pennsylvania in particular, North Carolina likely become a non-issue for him. So truth be told, it’s more of a swing state for Kamala Harris than it is Donald Trump.
