Vice President Harris may have already peaked. Now allies are turning into enemies.
And Kamala’s key endorsement gets taken back and now she doesn’t know what to do.
Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 campaign just hit another snag as a key Muslim group backing her has announced its disbandment, citing her campaign’s alleged refusal to let a Palestinian speaker take the stage at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).
This decision by Muslim Women for Harris-Walz to withdraw their support is a stark reflection of the growing dissatisfaction within the Democratic Party, especially as Harris’s campaign struggles to maintain unity.
Muslim Women for Harris-Walz stated in no uncertain terms that they could no longer support the vice president after learning that her team reportedly declined a request from the Uncommitted Movement to feature a Palestinian American speaker at the DNC.
The group’s statement reads, “We cannot in good conscience, continue Muslim Women for Harris-Walz, in light of this new information from the Uncommitted movement, that VP Harris’ team declined their request to have a Palestinian American speaker take the stage at the DNC.”
Yet, true to form, the Harris campaign has been dodging accountability, refusing to confirm or deny the claims when asked by the Associated Press.
The Muslim group didn’t mince words when they pointed out that Rachel Goldberg-Polin and Jon Polin, whose son is currently held by Hamas, demonstrated more empathy towards Palestinian Americans and Palestinians in their DNC address than the vice president or the DNC.
“This is a terrible message to send to Democrats,” the group said, adding, “Palestinians have the right to speak about Palestine.”
But the Harris campaign seems more interested in playing it safe than standing up for what’s right.
They continue to alienate key segments of their base, hoping that vague platitudes will suffice.
Even as the Uncommitted Movement, which includes 30 delegates who refused to support President Biden over his pro-Israel stance, stages protests and sit-ins, Harris’s team remains silent, hoping the storm will pass.
The disunity within the Democratic Party is becoming increasingly evident, with influential figures like Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) speaking out against the party’s handling of the situation.
Khanna called it a “tragic mistake” while Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the ongoing “dehumanization of Palestinians” by the Democratic leadership.
Despite the claims that a Palestinian American was denied a platform, the DNC made a token gesture by allowing a Sikh to give the final benediction on the third night while wearing a keffiyeh, a garment associated with Palestinians.
But let’s not forget, the Harris campaign is “glad” that the uncommitted vote is represented — just not on stage.
Georgia state Rep. Ruwa Romman, a Palestinian American who was denied the opportunity to speak, reminded Democratic leaders of the political cost of ignoring the Muslim vote.
“Are you really going to tell me that we can deliver a win come November without them?” she asked pointedly.
This debacle underscores the growing rift within the Democratic Party, as the Biden-Harris administration continues to stumble in the face of mounting internal opposition.
As the 2024 election approaches, it’s clear that Harris’s campaign is faltering, and the consequences of alienating key voter blocs could be disastrous.
