Obama’s Ceasefire Statement Draws Fire
Conservatives targeted former President Barack Obama following his Thursday statement on the Israel-Hamas ceasefire, which left out any reference to President Donald Trump.
Obama noted that people should feel encouraged and relieved with the conflict nearing an end, yet the Democrat avoided naming Trump or his team for advancing the deal’s initial phase.
“After two years of unimaginable loss and suffering for Israeli families and the people of Gaza, we should all be encouraged and relieved that an end to the conflict is within sight; that those hostages still being held will be reunited with their families; and that vital aid can start reaching those inside Gaza whose lives have been shattered,” Obama posted on X.
“More than that, though, it now falls on Israelis and Palestinians, with the support of the U.S. and the entire world community, to begin the hard task of rebuilding Gaza — and to commit to a process that, by recognizing the common humanity and basic rights of both peoples, can achieve a lasting peace.”
Obama encountered backlash across social media for skipping Trump’s name in his message.
Conservative Backlash Emerges
Donald Trump Jr. responded to the ex-president with: “I’ll finish it for you. ‘Thank you, Donald Trump.’”
“He couldn’t even utter Trump’s name,” posted Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO). “Obama was the most divisive President in modern American history and even in a moment of great accomplishment and peace he couldn’t be a unifier. Sad.”
“You were an awful president. And Donald J. Trump has not only cleaned up your mess, he has transformed the Middle East,” stated Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro.
War Origins and Ceasefire Details
The conflict erupted under the Biden administration after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in 1,200 deaths and hundreds taken hostage. Upon starting his second term in January, Trump pressed Israel and Hamas to halt the fighting.
He unveiled his 20-point peace proposal with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week and warned Hamas to accept the terms or confront “all H*LL.” The group agreed to free the remaining hostages soon after.
The Israel-Hamas ceasefire took effect Thursday once Israel gave final consent. The deal’s opening stage moves toward concluding the war, with Hamas set to surrender the last hostages.
Israel will free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including terrorists, in exchange. Israeli troops will also pull back from central Gaza amid the truce.
