Much of Trump’s win came down to his ability to court Catholic voters. Now he’s delivering.

And a Catholic Bishop praised Trump for a decisive move no one saw coming.

VA Reverts Abortion Policy, Aligning with Pro-Life Advocacy

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced the reversal of its Biden-era policy, which had expanded abortion access through VA health benefits and facilities.

The decision, formalized on August 4, halts abortion services in programs like the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) and prohibits VA medical centers from performing such procedures.

This shift responds to sustained advocacy from pro-life groups and religious leaders, marking a return to policies that restrict the use of federal funds for abortions.

Archbishop Broglio Praises Policy Shift

Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, who leads the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, and serves as president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, issued a statement on August 4 commending the VA’s decision.

“I am deeply grateful to VA Secretary Doug Collins and President Trump for returning to the prior policy that prohibits the use of federal funds to end the life of the preborn in the womb,” he said.

Broglio emphasized that the VA, an agency dedicated to serving those who protect the nation, should not be involved in procedures that conflict with preserving innocent life.

His remarks reflect a consistent stance against abortion policies within the VA, aligning with his broader advocacy for the sanctity of life.

History of Controversy and Advocacy

The Biden administration’s 2022 rule, which permitted abortions at VA facilities, had sparked significant debate.

Pro-life advocates, including Archbishop Broglio, criticized the policy as a departure from the VA’s mission to care for veterans.

In March 2024, Broglio labeled the policy a violation of human dignity, warning of its potential to cause “untold physical and psychological trauma on mothers.”

Earlier, in February, he had called the rule “deeply troubling” following President Trump’s decision to end taxpayer-funded abortion travel for service members.

The recent policy reversal addresses these concerns, responding to calls from Catholic and military leaders to prioritize life-affirming care within the VA.
