President Trump doesn’t take office for another few weeks. But he’s hard at work.
And Trump is ordering his incoming DOJ to make this eyebrow-raising move against Joe Biden.
President Joe Biden has been facing intense criticism for his executive decisions in recent weeks. His Democrat Party is on the heels of a truly embarrassing loss in which they were unable to win any major victories in the race for the White House, control of the U.S. House of Representatives, or the U.S. Senate chamber either. They also lost every single swing state to Donald Trump in the Presidential race, indicating that the American people are really not buying what the Democrats are selling right now. When you factor out deep blue Democrat strongholds like California and New York state, the nation overwhelmingly rejected the Democrat Party and their agenda. So Joe Biden does not have any Democrat Party capital to spend right now, and yet he’s spending it.
Joe Biden surprised the nation when he decided to renege on his promise to not pardon his son Hunter Biden, giving Hunter Biden the magic “get-out-of-jail” free pass from the Presidential power of the pen. Even many Democrat operatives and sitting Democrat elected officials were quick to disavow the move from Joe Biden, especially considering he said over and over that he was not going to give Hunter Biden a pardon of any kind.
Following that, Joe Biden started to go on a pardon and clemency spree, with some of the decisions leaving Democrat Party officials hanging their heads because there’s no defense for some of these decisions. Some are so baffling, Donald Trump is getting involved, now saying that he will reverse some of the pardons and clemency orders Joe Biden is handing down in the last few weeks of his Presidency.
Trump Responds to Biden’s Clemency for Death Row Inmates, Promises Stronger Enforcement of the Death Penalty
In the wake of President Joe Biden’s controversial decision to grant clemency to 37 death row inmates, President-elect Donald Trump issued a strong response, vowing to take a tougher stance on crime once he assumes office. Trump promised that he would “vigorously” enforce the death penalty to protect American families, particularly from violent criminals.
Writing on Truth Social on Tuesday, Trump outlined his plans to direct the Justice Department to pursue the death penalty with renewed urgency as soon as he is inaugurated. He stated, “As soon as I am inaugurated, I will direct the Justice Department to vigorously pursue the death penalty to protect American families and children from violent r*pists, m*rderers, and monsters.” Trump concluded his message with a call for a return to law and order, declaring, “We will be a Nation of Law and Order again!”
This declaration came after Biden’s decision on Monday to commute the death sentences of 37 individuals convicted of heinous crimes, including brutal m*rders. Biden’s decision involved reclassifying their sentences to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In his statement, Biden expressed his personal moral conviction that the death penalty should no longer be used at the federal level.
“Make no mistake: I condemn these m*rderers, grieve for the victims of their despicable acts, and ache for all the families who have suffered unimaginable and irreparable loss,” Biden wrote. “But guided by my conscience and my experience as a public defender, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Vice President, and now President, I am more convinced than ever that we must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level.”
Biden’s decision to commute these sentences has sparked intense criticism, particularly from families of the victims of the crimes committed by the now-clemency recipients. Among those whose sentences were commuted was Jorge Aviia-Torrez, who was convicted of the brutal m*rders of two young girls and a 20-year-old female naval officer.
In a statement, Kathleen Zellner, an attorney representing the father of one of the m*rdered girls, described Biden’s actions as politically motivated, accusing the President of making the decision “recklessly and for the President’s own political agenda against the incoming administration.”
Another inmate affected by Biden’s decision was Anthony Battle, who had been sentenced to death for m*rdering a prison guard while serving a life sentence for the m*rder of his wife. This commutation, like others, has led to widespread outrage, especially from the families of victims who feel that their loved ones’ k*llers are being unjustly spared the death penalty.
Family members of the victims expressed their frustration over Biden’s decision, with some accusing him of not considering the pain and suffering of those who have lost loved ones to violent criminals. Heather Turner, whose mother was k*lled by an inmate on death row, took to Facebook to voice her outrage, stating, “Joe Biden’s decision is a clear gross abuse of power. He, and his supporters, have blood on their hands.”
Trump, too, criticized Biden’s decision, calling it “makes no sense” and expressing concern for the families of victims who, he believes, have been further traumatized by the decision. “Relatives and friends are further devastated,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “They can’t believe this is happening!”
The debate over the death penalty in the United States continues to be a deeply divisive issue, with strong arguments on both sides. While Biden has expressed a commitment to ending federal executions, Trump’s response defends his belief that the death penalty is an essential tool in protecting public safety and ensuring justice for victims of violent crime.
