The FBI is now investigating its own role in a secretive operation launched under James B. Comey to infiltrate Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign using female undercover agents, according to whistleblower revelations.
FBI’s “Honeypot” Operation Targeted Trump Campaign
The investigation, first exposed by a whistleblower in a protected disclosure to the House Judiciary Committee, revealed that the FBI deployed two female undercover employees posing as “honeypots” — a term used in intelligence circles for operatives who feign romantic or s*xual interest to extract information.
According to the whistleblower, these undercover agents traveled with Trump and his staff during the 2016 campaign, embedding themselves at high levels under Comey’s direct supervision.
The operation was off-the-books, running outside official channels, and began in 2015 — a full year before the FBI formally launched Crossfire Hurricane, the now-infamous counterintelligence probe into debunked allegations of Trump-Russia collusion.
Current FBI Leadership Investigating Comey’s Secret Operation
Under the leadership of Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, the FBI is now working to track down those once-undercover employees who participated in Comey’s clandestine operation.
The FBI declined to comment on the investigation.
The whistleblower, who had personal knowledge of the operation, confirmed that Comey personally ordered and directed the probe. The disclosure makes it clear that the operation had no legitimate legal foundation, describing it as a fishing expedition to uncover anything incriminating on Trump or his staff.
“The case had no predicated foundation, so Comey personally directed the investigation without creating an official case file in Sentinel or any other FBI system,” the whistleblower stated. “The FBI has multiple methods of protecting highly sensitive investigations, so Comey did not have a legitimate reason not to officially create an official investigation file or have a file number.”
Hiding the Truth from Oversight
The whistleblower also revealed that the FBI took deliberate steps to obscure the existence of this investigation from Justice Department Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz, who conducted a comprehensive review of FBI misconduct in the Trump-Russia probe.
Despite the serious nature of the operation, none of the information related to this secretive investigation was ever provided to Trump’s legal team, further raising concerns of institutional bias against Trump at the FBI.
Investigation Shut Down to Protect Undercover Identities
The secret investigation was ultimately shut down after a major newspaper obtained a photograph of one of the undercover agents and planned to publish it. The FBI press office intervened, falsely claiming the photo showed an FBI informant whose life would be at risk if their identity were revealed. In reality, the image depicted one of the female undercover operatives.
Rewards and Cover-Ups for FBI Operatives
The whistleblower disclosed that one of the undercover agents was transferred to the CIA, ensuring she would never be available as a witness in any future investigation. The other agent was rewarded with a promotion and now holds a high-level executive position in a major FBI field office.
To maintain the secrecy of the operation, FBI employees involved were reportedly ordered to never discuss the matter again — not even with other agents who worked on the 2016 Trump campaign infiltration.
The whistleblower described this gag order as a direct threat, making clear that any attempt to speak out would result in severe professional consequences.
