Trump Transition Team and Biden White House Sign Formal Transition Agreement
The transition team for President-elect Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that it has finalized a memorandum of understanding with the Biden White House, officially beginning the process to transfer power between the two administrations.
“After completing the selection process of his incoming Cabinet, President-elect Trump is entering the next phase of his administration’s transition by executing a Memorandum of Understanding with President Joe Biden’s White House,” said Trump’s chief of staff, Susie Wiles, in a press release.
The memorandum allows the transition team to move forward with critical steps, including deploying “landing teams” to federal agencies and departments to prepare for the handover.
“This engagement allows our intended Cabinet nominees to begin critical preparations, including the deployment of landing teams to every department and agency, and complete the orderly transition of power,” the statement continued.
The Trump team emphasized that the process will not rely on taxpayer funding, aligning with what it described as the president-elect’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.
Trump’s transition into the White House “will not utilize taxpayer funding for costs related to the transition” and will function “as a self-sufficient organization,” the press release stated.
The team described its operations as “streamlined,” with built-in “security and information protections” that negate the need for “additional government bureaucratic oversight.”
Additionally, the transition team has outlined an ethics plan, which it says will be publicly available on the General Services Administration (GSA) website.
The memorandum facilitates collaboration between the incoming administration and federal agencies, allowing transition officials access to key documents and policy details.
The press release noted, “The Transition landing teams will quickly integrate directly into federal agencies and departments with access to documents and policy sharing.”
“Per the agreement, the Transition will disclose the landing team members to the Biden Administration.”
The delay in signing the agreement had drawn sharp criticism from Democrats, with Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., recently sending a letter to the GSA denouncing the hold-up.
Now, with the agreement in place, transition officials can obtain security clearances and begin receiving classified briefings.
The process also enables the FBI to conduct background checks on Trump’s Cabinet nominees, screening for potential personal or criminal issues that could disqualify them from key roles.
The GSA confirmed that the agreement includes logistical provisions such as “office space, IT equipment, office supplies, fleet vehicles, mail management, and payment of compensation and other expenses.” These measures are essential for ensuring a smooth transfer of authority.
This agreement represents a significant step in the transition process, aiming to balance efficiency, transparency, and the protection of public resources as Trump’s team prepares to take the reins of government.
