In a significant step forward for bilateral relations, Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed a landmark Intergovernmental Agreement on Civil Nuclear Cooperation with Hungary in Budapest on February 16, 2026.
The pact paves the way for expanded collaboration in civil nuclear energy, including potential deployment of advanced U.S. small modular reactor (SMR) technologies, nuclear fuel supply, and secure spent fuel storage solutions through American firms like Holtec International.
The signing, which took place alongside Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, underscores the Trump administration’s commitment to bolstering energy security in Central Europe while reducing reliance on traditional suppliers.
Following the ceremony, Rubio joined Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for a joint press conference, where both sides highlighted the deal’s role in promoting long-term stability and innovation in the sector.
Rubio Praises Deepening U.S.-Hungary Partnership
Rubio emphasized the exceptionally strong bond between the two nations, describing the relationship as “as close as I can possibly imagine it being.” He stressed mutual benefits, declaring, “Your success is our success.”
The Secretary went on to signal unwavering support from Washington, assuring that if Hungary encounters any financial hurdles, growth obstacles, or threats to its stability, “President Trump will be very interested” in “finding ways” to help.
The agreement builds on earlier high-level discussions, including a November meeting at the White House between President Trump and Prime Minister Orbán.
It also aligns with recent U.S. actions to ease certain sanctions, clearing the path for deeper energy cooperation and helping Hungary deliver reliable, competitively priced power to its citizens and industries.
Trump’s Endorsement Highlights Strategic Alignment
President Trump has repeatedly voiced strong admiration for Orbán’s leadership, praising his dedication to national priorities.
In a recent Truth Social post, Trump called the Hungarian leader “a truly strong and powerful Leader, with a proven track record of delivering phenomenal results. He fights tirelessly for, and loves, his Great Country and People, just like I do for the United States of America. Viktor works hard to Protect Hungary, Grow the Economy, Create Jobs, Promote Trade, Stop Illegal Immigration, and Ensure LAW AND ORDER!”
Trump further noted that “Relations between Hungary and the United States have reached new heights of cooperation and spectacular achievement under my Administration, thanks largely to Prime Minister Orbán.” He reaffirmed his full endorsement, calling Orbán “a true friend, fighter, and WINNER” who “will never let the Great People of Hungary down.”
