The Left wants open borders. And they are done hiding that fact.
And now Democrats fielded a last minute amnesty plan that is raising red flags.
Senior Democrats on Capitol Hill are urging President Biden to take swift and decisive action to protect illegal immigrants before he leaves office, fearing the impact of President-elect Donald Trump’s immigration policies on “immigrant families.”
Led by Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, the Senate’s second-ranking Democrat, the lawmakers called on Biden to issue broad deportation amnesties, accelerate asylum processes, and automatically renew work permits for migrants living in the U.S. under temporary amnesties.
“We write now because the window to secure and finalize your administration’s policies is closing rapidly,” the senators wrote in their letter.
“We urge you to act decisively between now and the inauguration of the president-elect to complete the important work of the past four years and protect immigrant families.”
The lawmakers specifically encouraged Biden to use unilateral executive powers like Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED).
These tools, which provide up to 18 months of deportation protection, were originally designed for individuals whose home countries are experiencing disasters or political unrest.
However, immigration advocates now view them as essential safeguards against Trump’s promises of “mass” deportations.
Biden has already leaned heavily on TPS during his presidency.
When Trump left office in early 2021, about 320,000 people in the U.S. were protected under TPS.
That number has since grown to more than 860,000, according to the Congressional Research Service.
The senators also pressed Biden to maximize renewals under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which protects illegal immigrant “Dreamers” from deportation.
They argued these individuals deserve at least “a couple more years of certainty” about their status.
Additionally, they encouraged the administration to issue a rule allowing DACA recipients to obtain “advance parole,” enabling them to leave and re-enter the U.S.
This provision would pave the way for many recipients to transition toward legal permanent residency and, eventually, citizenship.
Democrats and liberal activists are calling on Biden to do everything possible to “Trump-proof” immigration policies before the transition of power, urging him to lock in protections for illegal immigrants and distribute as much funding as possible before Trump can halt the spending.
