The Trump administration has initiated a comprehensive review of all 55 million U.S. visa holders to identify deportable offenses, prioritizing national security and public safety, the State Department announced on August 21.
The vetting process targets indicators such as visa overstays, criminal activity, threats to public safety, and support for terrorism, with violators facing visa revocation and deportation.
“We review all available information, including law enforcement and immigration records, to ensure eligibility,” a State Department spokesperson told the Associated Press.
This move aligns with President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration policies, which have already reduced the U.S. immigrant population by 1.4 million, from 53.3 million to 51.9 million, between January and June 2025, per Pew Research Center data, marking the first decline in 50 years.
Visa Vetting and Enforcement Actions
The administration’s focus includes intensified scrutiny of student visas, with 6,000 revoked since January, including 4,000 for crimes like assault, burglary, or driving under the influence, and 200-300 for terrorism-related activities, such as fundraising for Hamas, according to State Department statements to Fox News.
“Every student visa revocation has been due to lawbreaking or terrorism support,” a department official emphasized.
The broader crackdown, led by Border Czar Tom Homan, has seen Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrest 359,000 undocumented migrants and deport 332,000 in the first 200 days, with 1.6 million voluntarily leaving, per DHS figures.
Trump’s policies, including stricter asylum rules and visa requirements, have slashed illegal border crossings to under 5,000 monthly, a sharp contrast to the estimated 10 million illegal entries under the prior administration.
Economic and Social Impacts
Supporters, including DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, praise the initiative for reducing strain on public services and boosting job opportunities for American workers, with the immigrant workforce share dropping from 20% to 19%.
Trump highlighted the negative net migration on Truth Social, calling it a historic achievement.
Critics, including immigration advocacy groups, argue the sweeping review threatens legal immigrants, with some visa revocations—particularly for alleged terrorism support—raising concerns over free speech, as noted by Al Jazeera regarding students involved in pro-Palestinian protests.
