Top Democrat shocks all by dropping out of critical race

The campaign trail is heating up. But this leftist has had enough.

And a top Democrat shocked all by dropping out of this critical race.

Janet Mills, the Democrat Governor of Maine, has suspended her bid for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Sen. Susan Collins. What was supposed to be a high-profile challenge to unseat a longtime moderate has collapsed under the weight of internal party divisions and empty campaign coffers.

Mills pointed to a lack of money as the main reason she couldn’t keep pace with her primary opponent, Graham Platner, per reports.

In her statement announcing the suspension, Mills highlighted what she sees as her major accomplishments in office:

“As District Attorney, Attorney General and, now, as Governor, I have always fought for Maine people. Together, we’ve expanded health care, fully funded education, guaranteed free community college and free school meals, protected reproductive freedom, and made our state more resilient to the pollution and violent storms caused by climate change.”

She went on to blame external forces for holding back her agenda.

“Yet, these efforts have been undermined by a Republican administration that is blind to science, deaf to the cries of those in need of medical care, and ignorant of the needs of regular families.”

Mills originally jumped into the Senate race claiming she wanted to rescue Maine from bad deals coming out of Washington.

She painted a dire picture of the country under President Trump, insisting he was “threatening our democracy and pushing our nation to the brink of disaster.”

“I continue to believe that today,” she added.

Mills insisted she still has the passion and experience to serve but simply ran out of the cold, hard cash required to run a modern political operation.

“While I have the drive and passion, commitment and experience, and above all else – the fight – to continue on, I very simply do not have the one thing that political campaigns unfortunately require today: the financial resources,” she stated.

“That is why today I have made the incredibly difficult decision to suspend my campaign for the United States Senate.”

On the Republican side, Sen. Collins stands alone and offered a polite nod to her former rival’s long career.

“I’m sure this was a difficult decision for Governor Mills, and I thank her for her decades of service to the people of Maine,” Collins said.
