AI is what so many are talking about. Is it something to have us worried?
And AI concerns have been completely smashed to pieces by this Republican.
Rep. Greg Steube of Florida is not buying what Democrats are selling on artificial intelligence.
While interviewing on Fox Business Network’s The Evening Edit, the Republican lawmaker took direct aim at the left’s push to regulate AI, calling out the panic they keep trying to stir up.
Steube made clear that the sudden urgency from Democrats looks a lot like the same old playbook of scaring the public into accepting more government control.
He pointed straight at the history of manufactured crises and refused to play along.
“[W]hat this reminds me a lot of is the year 2000,” Steube stated.
“Remember all the reports that the world was going to end because the computers were going to switch over to zero-zero-zero and we weren’t going to have power, and we weren’t going to have infrastructure, and the military was going to shut down. It reminds me a lot about that.”
That comparison lands hard for anyone who lived through the late 1990s. Experts and politicians warned of total collapse.
Airlines would fall from the sky. Banks would freeze. Society would grind to a halt. Then the calendar flipped and nothing of the sort happened.
Steube is right to call this out. Some of the same voices who cried catastrophe over Y2K now claim AI will destroy jobs, democracy, and civilization itself unless Congress steps in with heavy-handed rules.
Americans have seen this movie before and know how it ends: more bureaucracy, higher costs, and slower progress.
“So I think we should get out of the fearmongering and know that we’re not going to govern by fear in the United States Congress,” the congressman said.
“We are going to govern by common sense and good policy, and the president has made it very clear politically where he stands on this issue. So, Congress, even trying to act on this, the President is not going to sign any bill that Congress may pass in the next three months as we go into the midterms, so I think we need to be focused on National Security first and ensure that we win the AI race as it relates to China.”
That is the heart of the matter. While Democrats want to regulate first and innovate later, the real contest is with China.
