A Democratic lawmaker openly confessed that his party’s handling of the recent government standoff delivered more pain to Americans than any real progress on their radical immigration agenda.
Rep. Gabe Vasquez of New Mexico appeared on MS NOW’s Way Too Early and pulled back the curtain on the internal frustrations bubbling within Democratic ranks.
Rather than doubling down on the usual spin, he laid out a blunt assessment that should alarm anyone who cares about secure borders and functional governance.
The congressman didn’t mince words about the outcome. He argued that Democrats needed a tougher approach from the start.
“I think, certainly, we could have had a much stronger posture, right? In those demands that we asked for, look, there [are] a lot of must-pass bills in Congress, the National Defense Authorization Act, the farm bill,” Vasquez stated.
“There [are] other vehicles under which to negotiate and I don’t want to say hold hostage, but also use as tools for leverage and — to get these reforms in place. And so you have to have a playbook that meets the moment, and I don’t believe that we did.”
“And the shutdown, I think, hurt more people than it actually helped, because it certainly didn’t help our negotiations.”
Vasquez made clear he was talking about the lengthy Department of Homeland Security impasse that dragged on longer than any previous federal shutdown in U.S. history.
His comments reveal a party more obsessed with gutting ICE than with keeping the government running smoothly for citizens.
This admission cuts to the heart of what frustrates so many working families across the country.
While Democrats schemed to use the crisis as leverage against border security agencies, real people faced delayed paychecks, closed national parks, and disrupted services.
The pain was real, and now even one of their own admits it accomplished nothing.
