The weaponization of the federal government is a hallmark of Biden’s administration. But now it’s all coming crashing down.
Because an FBI informant for Joe Biden got smacked with a devastating lawsuit.
Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov, already facing charges for allegedly lying about President Joe Biden’s and Hunter Biden’s business dealings, now confronts a fresh wave of legal trouble.
Special Counsel David Weiss has filed new tax-related charges against Smirnov, deepening the legal drama surrounding the controversial figure.
The ten-count indictment accuses Smirnov of tax evasion and filing false tax returns, claiming he failed to pay taxes on more than $2 million in income between 2020 and 2022.
Prosecutors allege Smirnov used the money for extravagant purchases, including a $1.4 million Las Vegas condo, a Bentley, and lavish spending on clothes, jewelry, and accessories for himself and his partner.
The charges, filed last Thursday, remained under wraps until Tuesday when they were unsealed in federal court in California.
Smirnov, who served as a confidential FBI informant from 2010 until his arrest in February, was previously indicted for fabricating claims that the Biden family received $10 million in bribes from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
These allegations formed the basis for the House GOP’s impeachment inquiry into President Biden earlier this year.
While House Republicans ultimately did not impeach Biden, they labeled his actions “impeachable conduct” in a report released during the Democratic National Convention in August.
Smirnov has maintained his innocence regarding the allegations of fabricating claims against the Bidens.
He admitted the information he provided stemmed from Russian intelligence sources but denies knowingly making false statements.
His legal team has pushed back against the new charges, stating in an email to the Associated Press that Smirnov “intends to vigorously fight” the tax-related allegations “with the same intensity as he has fought the original indictment.”
These latest charges emerge just as Smirnov is set to stand trial on the false-statements indictment, with proceedings scheduled to begin January 8 after prior delays.
Special Counsel Weiss, who has led investigations into Hunter Biden’s activities, has also filed two indictments against the president’s son: one for illegally purchasing a firearm and another for federal tax violations.
Hunter Biden is expected to be sentenced in December for avoiding at least $1.4 million in taxes and for lying on a federal form when purchasing a handgun in 2018.
As Smirnov faces his mounting legal woes, the broader investigations into the Biden family continue to stir political controversy, underscoring the intersection of legal battles and high-stakes politics.
