The Left are turning on each other. And it’s getting worse by the day.
Now a former Biden confidant completely disavowed the Democrat Party.
Ex-Biden Strategist Slams Party’s “Disloyal” Coup
In a blistering critique delivered Tuesday at the USC Center for the Political Future conference, Mike Donilon—longtime senior advisor to former President Joe Biden—accused Democratic leaders of a profound betrayal by orchestrating Biden’s exit from the 2024 presidential race. He described the move as both undemocratic and politically catastrophic, ultimately handing the White House to Donald Trump.
Speaking as a guest panelist, Donilon didn’t hold back when CNN anchor and event host Elex Michaelson asked about Biden’s July withdrawal.
“I thought what happened in the party, I thought it was disloyal. I thought it was an act of betrayal against the president. I thought it was undemocratic because it didn’t respect the will of Democratic primary voters,” he said.
“The Democratic Party Lost Its Mind”
Donilon pulled no punches in condemning the pressure campaign—led by figures such as Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi—that followed Biden’s shaky June 2024 debate performance against Trump.
“I thought the Democratic Party lost its mind. That’s what I thought,” he said.
He insisted Biden remained the strongest possible nominee, arguing that the president was still polling within three points of Trump—inside the margin of error—and that no incumbent or party-nominated candidate that competitively positioned had ever been forced out in American history.
“I thought that Joe Biden was the best candidate. I thought he was the most likely person to be elected president. I thought he would be the best president,” Donilon declared. He rejected the narrative of incapacity outright: “No one can point to a moment in the Biden presidency when he failed to do his job as president.”
Donilon also highlighted Biden’s unique track record: “So look, my view was, look, there have been three people who’ve run against Donald Trump—Joe Biden’s the only person who ever beat him.”
A Last-Minute Campaign Was “Politically Stupid”
The veteran strategist further lambasted the decision to abruptly restart the Democratic campaign in the heat of summer, just weeks before the party’s convention.
“And I thought it was politically stupid, because I think the idea that you can create a campaign in the middle of a summer, a few weeks before a convention and run a nominee, was not a smart decision,” he said.
While Donilon stressed that Vice President Kamala Harris ultimately “ran a really good race,” he maintained that the forced switch doomed Democratic chances. Reports from December 2024 revealed Biden himself privately told allies he still believed he could have defeated Trump had he stayed in the contest.
