Federal Audit Exposes Lax Standards and Fatal Risks
Both Newsom’s Democratic team and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s office confirm these licenses flouted pre-existing rules—before Duffy sharpened enforcement post a national CDL audit.
The probe ignited after an illegal driver’s U-turn in Florida k*lled three; deadly truck wrecks in Texas, Alabama, and a fiery California crash last month that claimed three more lives amplified urgency. State officials dodged questions on revocation specifics.
Duffy hailed Wednesday’s revocations as proof California had erred, despite prior defenses of its system. The state began its review only after Duffy’s flags.
He already yanked $40 million in federal funds for ignored English proficiency rules and warned of another $160 million cut unless every improper license vanishes.
″After weeks of claiming they did nothing wrong, Gavin Newsom and California have been caught red-handed. Now that we’ve exposed their lies, 17,000 illegally issued trucking licenses are being revoked,” Duffy declared.
”This is just the tip of iceberg. My team will continue to force California to prove they have removed every illegal immigrant from behind the wheel of semitrucks and school buses.” Newsom’s camp countered that all affected drivers held valid federal work permits.
“Once again, the Sean ‘Road Rules’ Duffy fails to share the truth — spreading easily disproven falsehoods in a sad and desperate attempt to please his dear leader,” spokesman Brandon Richards fired back.
Tough New Rules Shield Roads, Target Only Worst Offenders
Duffy’s September overhaul slashes immigrant CDL eligibility to three visa types—H-2A agricultural, H-2B nonagricultural, and E-2 investor—verified via federal database, with one-year caps. Of 200,000 noncitizen licenses nationwide, just 10,000 qualify; the rest keep theirs until renewal, avoiding retroactive chaos.
Those rules postdate the 17,000 flawed issuances, now expiring in 60 days. Auditors found one in four sampled California licenses invalid, including four lingering years past work-permit expiration.
