The Iran war is wrapping up. Trump is setting his sights somewhere else.
Now Trump shifted gears and sent a terrifying threat to one American enemy.
Trump Signals Pivot from Iran to Russia at G7 Summit
President Donald Trump indicated during the G7 gathering in France that the U.S. is ready to shift its primary focus away from the recent Middle East tensions involving Iran and back toward the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He expressed optimism about reimposing sanctions on Russian oil exports now that energy markets have stabilized.
“Iran in the Rearview Mirror” and Renewed Pressure on Moscow
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the summit in Evian-les-Bains, Trump highlighted the progress made on the Iranian front and the potential to tighten economic measures against Russia:
“Soon we’ll be able to do that because the oil is now flowing. We’re in a position to do that soon.”
Trump further stated that Iran would soon be “back in the rearview mirror,” freeing up bandwidth to address Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine. This stance follows a period where certain restrictions on Russian oil were temporarily loosened to prevent global energy prices from skyrocketing during the height of the Iran-related instability. With the Gulf ceasefire in place and shipping lanes reopened, the administration appears poised to resume pressure on Moscow.
Allied Coordination and Trump’s Commitment to Ending the War
The comments come amid a wave of new sanctions from European allies. Britain, Canada, and the European Union are ramping up measures targeting Russia’s energy sector, shadow fleet, financial networks, and more. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared:
“Putin should roll back his tanks, end his barbaric strikes and come to the negotiating table.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky joined the G7 discussions, noting unanimous support among the leaders. Trump acknowledged the difficulties in brokering peace but reaffirmed his drive to resolve the conflict:
“The whole thing is ridiculous. So, yeah, I’m going to do whatever I can.”
This renewed alignment on sanctions reflects a broader Western effort to force Russia back to the negotiating table following recent Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities.
