Donald Trump is busy making preparations for his return to power. Now he’s completely surprised.
Because he was hit with a shocking test result that changes everything.
President-elect Donald Trump is poised to begin his second term in the White House with a majority of Americans optimistic about his performance and satisfied with his handling of the transition, according to a newly released CNN poll.
The survey, published Thursday, shows 56% of Americans expect Trump to do a “good job” as the 47th president, a notable increase from the 48% who held that view following his 2016 election victory.
The president-elect has also received high marks for his approach to his second transition into office, with 55% of respondents approving of how he has managed the process. This marks a significant improvement from the 40% approval rating he garnered during his first transition eight years ago.
Trump’s favorability rating as he prepares to take office stands at 46%, the highest it has been since his initial victory over Hillary Clinton.
Optimism about the nation’s economy under Trump remains strong.
A majority of Americans (56%) believe the economy will be “very or somewhat good” after Trump’s first year back in the Oval Office.
Additionally, 52% of those surveyed think the country will be better off overall by the end of Trump’s second term.
Much of this optimism stems from expectations that Trump will deliver on key campaign promises.
According to the poll, 80% of Americans believe it is likely Trump will impose tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China, while half expect the cost of U.S. goods to decrease under his leadership.
One of Trump’s most controversial pledges — his plan to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history — appears to have broad support, with 74% of respondents believing he will follow through on detaining and deporting migrants who entered the country illegally.
Fewer Americans (56%) expect Trump to go so far as to shut down the U.S.-Mexico border, though the idea remains a point of contention.
Other issues reveal a more divided public.
While 54% think Trump will succeed in reducing the size and cost of the federal government, only 49% believe he is likely to end the war in Ukraine, an issue that has loomed large on the international stage.
As the nation prepares for Trump, 78, to be sworn in as the 47th president on Monday, his supporters and critics alike are waiting to see how these promises will unfold.
With public expectations running high, Trump enters his second term with an ambitious agenda and a belief among many Americans that his policies could bring significant change.
Whether he can meet these expectations remains to be seen, but for now, optimism about his presidency appears to be growing.
