Trump Slashes Refugee Cap to Historic Low, Prioritizes Persecuted Afrikaners
The Trump administration delivered a decisive blow to open-border policies on Thursday, announcing a dramatic cut to the U.S. refugee admissions cap for fiscal year 2026 at just 7,500—a fraction of the over 100,000 refugees flooded into the country under Joe Biden in FY 2024, the highest since 1994.
This bold move, detailed in a Federal Register notice, marks a sharp “realignment” of U.S. policy, explicitly prioritizing Afrikaners—a predominantly white South African minority facing brutal discrimination—and “other victims of illegal or unjust discrimination” in their homelands.
The cap is justified as serving “humanitarian concerns” and the national interest, putting American communities first after years of unchecked migration.
A senior Trump official told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the administration is fulfilling its promise to “end Biden’s abuse of the refugee program.”
The ongoing government shutdown, blamed squarely on Democrat obstructionism, will further delay admissions:
“No refugees will be admitted in FY26 until the appropriate consultations with Congress are held, which are being delayed because certain members of Congress insisted on shutting down the government.”
Protecting American Communities from Migration Overload
President Trump’s directive echoes his January 20 executive order suspending the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, which highlighted the devastating strain on cities like Charleroi, Pennsylvania; Springfield, Ohio; and Whitewater, Wisconsin.
“The United States lacks the ability to absorb large numbers of migrants, and in particular, refugees, into its communities in a manner that does not compromise the availability of resources for Americans, that protects their safety and security, and that ensures the appropriate assimilation of refugees,” the order stated.
Championing Persecuted Afrikaners Amid South African Tyranny
Trump’s focus on Afrikaners underscores his commitment to genuine victims of persecution, a group long ignored by previous administrations.
Since taking office, Trump has spotlighted their plight—documented violence, land seizures, and discriminatory policies by the South African government, which his executive order accuses of “disregard” for citizens’ rights through “hateful rhetoric and government actions fueling disproportionate violence against racially disfavored landowners.”
In May, Trump signed an order fast-tracking their resettlement, with initial groups already arriving safely in the U.S.
The administration is also pressing the United Nations to overhaul flawed asylum rules, condemning the current system as a “haphazard and chaotic” setup exploited by migrants “asylum shopping” for preferred destinations. Trump’s reforms end the abuse, restore order, and deliver the secure borders Americans demanded.
