On September 2, the U.S. military conducted a precision strike in the southern Caribbean, targeting a drug-smuggling vessel operated by Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang, shortly after it departed Venezuelan waters.
President Donald Trump announced the operation during a White House press conference, emphasizing his administration’s resolve to combat the flow of illegal narcotics into the United States.
The strike, which k*lled 11 crew members with no U.S. casualties, marks a significant escalation in efforts to dismantle criminal networks threatening American communities.
“We just over the last few minutes, literally, shot out a boat, a drug-carrying boat,” Trump told reporters at the 2 p.m. conference. “A lot of drugs in that boat.”
Bolstering National Security Through Forceful Action
The operation aligns with the Trump administration’s broader campaign to curb drug trafficking, particularly from Venezuela, which has long served as a major transit hub for narcotics bound for the U.S. “We have a lot of drugs pouring into our country, coming in for a long time,” Trump stated.
“And these came out of Venezuela, and coming out very heavily from Venezuela.” On Truth Social, he elaborated, stating the strike “resulted in 11 terrorists k*lled in action” and issued a stern warning: “Please let this serve as notice to anybody even thinking about bringing drugs into the United States of America. BEWARE!”
Accompanying the post was a black-and-white video showing the vessel exploding in flames, highlighting the operation’s decisiveness. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the strike on X, describing it as “a lethal strike in the southern Caribbean against a drug vessel which had departed from Venezuela and was being operated by a designated narco-terrorist organization.”
The administration’s recent deployment of seven warships and over 4,500 Marines and sailors to the Caribbean, including the USS Lake Erie and the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, has bolstered its capacity to execute such operations, signaling a robust commitment to national security.
Targeting Tren de Aragua’s Criminal Empire
President Trump identified Tren de Aragua as a “designated Foreign Terrorist Organization, operating under the control of Nicolas Maduro, responsible for mass m*rder, drug trafficking, s-x trafficking, and acts of violence and terror across the United States and Western Hemisphere.”
Originating over a decade ago in Venezuela’s lawless Aragua prison, the gang has expanded across Latin America, exploiting the exodus of over 7.7 million Venezuelans fleeing economic and political turmoil since 2017. Despite Venezuelan claims that Tren de Aragua was dismantled in a 2023 prison raid, the U.S. maintains it remains a potent threat, with Rubio noting the drugs were likely headed to Trinidad or other Caribbean nations before reaching the U.S.
This strike, the first major military action since the U.S. bolstered its Caribbean presence, reflects the administration’s shift from traditional law enforcement to military-led counterdrug operations, a move praised by former DEA official Derek Maltz as “long overdue.”
However, critics note the lack of clarity on how the military confirmed the crew’s affiliation with Tren de Aragua, and Venezuelan officials, including Communications Minister Freddy Ñáñez, have questioned the authenticity of the strike video, though initial Reuters checks found no evidence of manipulation.
