Over 1,800 survivors, first responders, and family members of victims of 9/11 have written a letter to Vice President Joe Biden, imploring him to “stand up for the victims” and demanding that the U.S. government share all data that will “further reveal the role Saudi agents played” in the assault.
Family members of those killed in the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and United Flight 93 attacks on September 11, 2001 have said it has been 22 years since they first demanded responsibility from the Saudi government.
The oil kingdom provided resources, logistical support, financial support, and manpower to the al-Qaida terrorist group, according to the letter. Eleven out of the fourteen hijackers were from Saudi Arabia.
Representative and president of 9/11 Justice Brett Eagleson said the families have reached their “wits end.”
“We never would’ve imagined we would be fighting our own government this hard for closure and accountability,” he recently told news outlet Newsmax.
Two years after Vice President Joe Biden issued an executive order directing agencies to disclose U.S. government documents related to the 9/11 attacks, Eagleson said the letter was published to bring attention to the fact that federal agencies like the FBI, DOJ, and CIA are essentially “ignoring” the president and “refusing to comply.”
“We find ourselves again, inexplicably thwarted by our own government in our quest for transparency about the role the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its officials played in the 9/11 plot,” the letter reads.
The 9/11 victims’ letter follows news that the DOJ is reportedly planning to close a plea deal with terrorist Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, widely regarded as the plot’s mastermind.
The letter states that the agreement would “prevent a public trial” and “hide from the 9/11 Families and the American public” material that “no doubt would shed light on the identity of 9/11 conspirators.”
According to Eagleson, the families believe that the real reason behind such a transaction is to cover up the “true role of the Saudi government.”
“The reason that’s so infuriating is that it’s the continuation of our government’s unwillingness to allow information to see the light of day,” he remarked.
However, the signatories also said that they have “yet to get the core documents” they requested, despite their gratitude to Biden for signing an executive order.
The following are examples of document requests that have not been completed.
In this case, the “actual phone records” of Omar al-Bayoumi, the Saudi agent who allegedly harbored and helped hijackers Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi after they were transferred to San Diego.
The FBI analysis reports that reportedly link the hijackers, Bayoumi, and the Saudi official Fahad al-Thumairy, who visited with Mihdhar and Hazmi upon their landing in the United States.
The itinerary for Mihdhar and Hazmi’s trip from Bangkok via Hong Kong to Los Angeles, as booked by the airline.
“We know from what has been publicly disclosed that all of this and more is in the FBI’s possession, but despite our repeated requests and contrary to your Executive Order, the Department of Justice and the FBI continue to withhold it from us,” Eagleson added.
The victims asked Biden to do three things in their letter. Firstly, put the needs of the victims ahead of those of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and other terrorists; secondly, refuse to “bow to the demands of any embarrassed government officials willing to sacrifice transparency in favor of reputation;” and thirdly, remain committed to helping the victims find “truth and justice.”
