In the U.S. Senate, the majority for the Democrats has barely been able to help them at all in the latest Congressional term.
Though they unexpectedly gained a seat in the 2022 midterms when John Fetterman (D-PA) beat political outsider Dr. Oz, they haven’t been able to do anything with that majority at all.
Now, Chuck Schumer is desperate to hold on to his Senate Majority Leader role in the 2024 elections, but to do so he will need a miracle as Democrats are defending way more seats than the Republicans.
The Democrats have been eyeing the Senate seat held by Ted Cruz (R-TX), believing they can flip it any day now. Especially as his races have gotten closer over the years. But Schumer and company just received bad news on that front.
It would appear that Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz is ramping up his fundraising efforts in preparation for his 2024 campaign to be elected to a third term in the Upper Chamber of Congress.
According to numbers obtained by reporters in the media this week, the conservative firebrand Senator raised $5.4 million between July and September of 2023.
Cruz’s total surpasses his previous fundraising highs of $1.8 million in the first quarter of 2023 and $4.4 million in the second quarter of 2023. It’s also a big jump from the $3.5 million he brought in during the same fundraising quarter in 2017, the third quarter of his 2018 re-election campaign.
The Cruz campaign claims to have had over $6.7 million in the bank at the beginning of October.
During the quarter, the Senator received donations from Texans in 240 of the state’s 254 counties, as well as supporters from all 50 states, for a total of over 34,000 donors, notably 10,000 new contributors.
Senator Ted Cruz’s re-election campaign has unprecedented momentum and enthusiasm. The third quarter’s $5.4 million in donations shows that Texans are more energized than ever to re-elect Ted Cruz and keep their state at the forefront of conservative ideals. “Democrats better get ready, because Senator Cruz is ready to put up a hell of a fight to keep Texas, Texas,” Cruz spokesman Nick Maddux stressed to Fox News.
The 2020 race, in which Cruz will seek a third term representing Texas, has been described by the candidate as “going to be a firefight.” There is also a crowded Democratic primary for the chance to run against him in 2024.
In a close Senate race in 2018, Cruz narrowly defeated then-Rep. Beto O’Rourke. Earlier this year, in an interview with Fox News Digital, Cruz boasted, “There is no Republican in the country that Democrats hate more than me.”
He emphasized that it is “something I wear as a badge of honor. There is no Republican that they would like to beat more than me.”
Cruz was heavily outraised by O’Rourke in that 2018 contest, and Rep. Colin Allred, the most notable of the Democrats hoping to take on Cruz, raised more than the senator did in the second quarter of 2023.
Allred has not yet revealed his fundraising totals for the third quarter. The deadline for Senate candidates to submit their reports to the Federal Election Commission is October 15th.
The total amount raised by the Ted Cruz for Senate committee (the senator’s re-election campaign), the Ted Cruz Victory Committee (a joint fundraising committee with the senator’s re-election campaign), and the Jobs, Freedom & Security PAC (a leadership political action committee) in the third quarter was announced by the Cruz campaign. Cruz’s re-election campaign is off limits to the leadership PAC’s spending.
In the next elections, Senate Democrats will be defending their slim 51-49 control.
Depending on whether the party wins the White House in 2024, the Republicans only need a net gain of one or two seats in 2024 to retake the majority.
