And now CNN HQ is on fire after making one fatal mistake they’ll never live down.
CNN faced widespread ridicule on Thursday for a report that suggested the Trump-Vance campaign was trying to “goad” Vice President Harris into speaking with reporters, supposedly to “trip” her up.
This narrative, which seems more like an attempt to shield Harris from scrutiny, quickly became a target of mockery.
“In another front of its emerging offensive against Harris, the Trump campaign cranked up pressure on the vice president to do a major media interview, apparently hoping to goad her into a forum in which she’s historically been more vulnerable than when delivering scripted speeches,” the article claimed, as if a major media interview was some kind of insidious trap rather than a basic expectation for someone in her position.
The report continued, “In this light, Trump’s pledge to hold a news conference on Thursday looks like an attempt to create a contrast with the vice president,” adding that Harris might face risks in an unscripted setting—a rather telling admission about her capabilities.
CNN didn’t stop there, noting, “Harris, especially early in her vice presidency, sometimes waffled in interviews and unscripted moments, and the Trump campaign clearly sees this as a potential way to slow her strong start.”
The network appeared to excuse Harris’s avoidance of the press, suggesting that with the Democratic National Convention just weeks away, there’s no reason for her to take risks—risks like, say, answering questions from journalists.
But social media commentators were quick to call out CNN for what many saw as running interference for Harris.
Maxim Lott, an executive producer, skewered CNN’s narrative with biting sarcasm: “CNN’s lead story … the Trump campaign has a devious new plan … trying to goad Harris into a trap known as a ‘major media interview.’”
RealClearInvestigations senior writer Mark Hemingway took a more direct shot, saying, “If you’re ‘historically vulnerable’ doing a media interview, maybe you shouldn’t be the person responsible for negotiating with hostile foreign leaders?”
NewsBusters executive editor Tim Graham jokingly suggested, “Can’t CNN interview her while they massage her feet?” highlighting the network’s apparent protective stance.
Benjamin Weingarten, editor-at-large at RealClearInvestigations, argued, “The Media is The Regime’s PR arm,” echoing the sentiment that CNN was more interested in covering for Harris than holding her accountable.
Former GOP lawmaker Ryan Costello pointed out the absurdity of the situation: “What’s pathetic is that the media isn’t relentlessly doing it to her themselves, and calling her to task for running a heretofore vapid campaign. That used to be their job.”
Charlie Harper, founder of GeorgiaPol.com, also chimed in, criticizing the press corps for not demanding more from Harris.
“It is amazing that the National Press/White House Press Corps are not demanding a sitting VP and nominee for President take their questions, but also are running interference to project any demand that she answer questions as a partisan plot.”
Acton Institute’s Anthony Sacramone delivered a stinging critique: “The woman who wants to be leader of the free world is too fragile to take questions from a sycophantic American press. So who’s going to protect her from China, Russia, Iran, and our allies? Who tells them it’s sexist/racist to ask rude policy questions?”
After 18 days of dodging the media, Harris finally spoke to reporters on Thursday afternoon—spending less than two minutes answering questions.
The brief exchange only fueled more skepticism about her ability to handle the pressures of the vice presidency, especially in an unscripted environment.
