U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents continue to seize record amounts of fentanyl, methamphetamine, guns, and ammunition at the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona.
Seizures in May maintained the trend of authorities apprehending accused smugglers attempting to transport drugs into the United States and firearms to Mexico.
Cartel and gang operations have a history of smuggling people and drugs into the United States, as well as weapons, ammunition, cash, and other contraband to Mexico using stolen vehicles, according to law enforcement sources.
Last month, CBP inspectors intercepted more than over three million fentanyl tablets in one load, according to Mariposa Nogales Port Director Michael Humphries. After checking a utility trailer, a canine squad helped investigators discover around 3,372,300 fentanyl pills buried inside hollow steel beams that formed the trailer’s bottom.
According to the United States Drug Enforcement Agency, seven out of every ten fentanyl pills seized contain a fatal amount of fentanyl.
In one single seizure, CBP agents confiscated enough fentanyl tablets to kill at least 2.36 million people, according to the DEA’s calculation.
Another stop saw CBP officials conducting outbound operations collect 13,460 rounds of assault weapon ammo. After investigating the car, they discovered the ammunition hidden inside the panels, firewall, and one of the doors.
During another outbound stop, they seized 53,858 rounds of various caliber ammunition, two handguns, nine M13 Thermobaric devices, and 18 magazines. The ammo and “large amount of munitions was most likely going to supply and support cartel operations,” Humphries added.
In another check, Nogales POE CBP officials conducting commercial operations discovered 323 pounds of methamphetamine disguised within a cargo of charcoal. Some of the parcels contained packets disguised as charcoal logs, which contained meth mixed in with the charcoal. A K9 unit contributed to the discovery of the stash.
According to AddictionResources.net, the deadly dose of methamphetamine is approximately 200 milligrams. Based on the amount collected, and using this standard, they seized enough meth to kill over 2,267 people.
In the week preceding Memorial Day weekend, Nogales POE CBP inspectors seized about 265,275 fentanyl tablets in a spare tire at a single stop on May 26. On May 28, they seized 56 pounds of meth that had been stashed in a spare tire.
On May 29, authorities confiscated around 22,050 fentanyl pills tied to the legs of an alleged smuggler. They also seized around 49,950 fentanyl pills concealed within a car battery.
They seized enough fentanyl and meth to kill more than 25.6 million people in just a few stops.
In another single stop, they discovered about 700,000 fentanyl tablets concealed in various food containers, packing, cans, and cartons in the trunk of a vehicle. The amount collected was enough to kill almost 490,000 people, more than the populations of all Arizona cities save Phoenix, Tucson, and Mesa.
“Officers continue to be very diligent in their search for dangerous opioids,” Humphries added.
The amount of fentanyl and meth recovered in these few stops was enough to kill nearly four times Arizona’s population of slightly more than 7 million.
The Nogales POE is part of the CBP Tucson Sector, which is one of the most active in the country for agents combating illegal activity. It is approximately 65 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border and serves as the commercial entry point into the United States from Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.
The Greater Nogales Santa Cruz County Port Authority estimates that the value of imports and exports passing through the Mariposa Nogales POE in 2022 will be $28.6 billion.
The port authority says that more than 10.3 million people crossed through the port of entry from Mexico into Arizona in 2023. This included almost 382,000 trucks, 3.7 million cars, 889 trains, and almost 3 million people walking.
Over the past three fiscal years, CBP Tucson OFO agents have arrested a record number of unlawful border crossers.
According to CBP data, they apprehended 28,292 unlawful border crossers from fiscal year 2024 to April, nearly as many as they did in fiscal year 2023 (29,086). The bulk of those seized were single adults.
CBP figures show that they apprehended 9,929 in fiscal year 2022 and 6,659 in fiscal year 2021.
