Border Czar Tom Homan Defends Trump Administration’s Mass Deportations Amid Celebrity Backlash
Tom Homan, the Border Czar under the Trump administration, recently doubled down on his defense of the aggressive mass deportation operation initiated by the federal government. This comes as celebrities and pop culture figures have been posting videos online of them wailing over how “inhumane” the deportations of illegal violent criminals are. However, Homan made it clear that he owed “no apologies” for the enforcement actions, emphasizing the importance of national security and public safety.
The recent surge in deportations is part of a new effort by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to ramp up enforcement actions, which have led to the arrest of over 2,000 illegal migrant criminals in just the past seven days. These individuals, according to Homan, are considered to be “public safety and national security threats,” and the operation reflects the Trump administration’s commitment to securing the U.S. border.
Selena Gomez, a prominent celebrity and activist, posted a tearful video on Instagram this past Monday, lamenting the impact of the new policy. She referred to those being deported as “her people” and accused the administration of mistreating children. The 32-year-old pop star’s emotional plea quickly garnered widespread attention. Despite the outpouring of celebrity concern, Homan stood firm in his position.
“I don’t think we’ve arrested any families. We’ve arrested public safety and national security threats, bottomline,” Homan stated in his response. He went on to highlight the national security issues that he believes have emerged as a result of open borders, pointing to the staggering number of illegal crossings during the Biden administration. “What happened at our southern border the last four years is the biggest national security threat this country’s seen at least in my lifetime,” Homan said, noting the two million known “gotaways,” the rise in s*x trafficking, and the influx of fentanyl from across the border.
Homan also defended the Trump administration’s basic strategy, pointing to President Trump’s 2016 election platform, which was heavily focused on border security. According to Homan, the rise in crime and drug deaths linked to illegal immigration necessitated tough action. “We’re gonna do this job and we’re gonna enforce the laws of this country. If they don’t like it, then go to Congress and change the law,” he added, calling for legislative changes if the public is dissatisfied with current enforcement policies.
In addition to his public comments, Homan made assurances that the mass deportations would lead to significant reductions in crime, fentanyl deaths, and s*x trafficking. He reiterated, “It’s all for the good of this nation and we’re gonna keep going. No apologies, and we’re moving forward.”
The Trump administration’s tough stance on immigration has already led to some significant enforcement actions. In just the first week of operations, ICE detained hundreds of illegal migrant criminals and deported them using military aircraft. On one day alone, agents arrested 956 migrant criminals, an action that outpaced the average number of daily arrests seen under the Biden administration. Among the individuals apprehended were a suspected terrorist, members of the Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua, and several individuals with prior convictions for serious crimes, including child s*xual abuse.
Homan also discussed political context of the operation, noting that many of the arrested individuals had lengthy criminal records. Video footage aired on Fox News highlighted one such arrest, showing a Haitian national with 17 prior criminal convictions being taken into custody by ICE agents in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition to the Haitian migrant, agents also arrested individuals from Brazil, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic — each with charges ranging from armed robbery to r*pe and assault with a deadly weapon.
Donald Trump’s Executive Orders Make Real Changes, More To Come
In response to increasing criticism of his administration’s border policies, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 20 that declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border. This order allowed for additional resources to be allocated to address the migrant crisis, which escalated under the Biden administration. As part of this initiative, the Department of Defense deployed 1,500 active-duty troops to the border and began using military aircraft for deportation operations.
One of the most significant changes resulting from this order was the revocation of a Biden-era policy that had prevented ICE agents from conducting arrests in so-called “sensitive locations,” such as churches, schools, and hospitals. According to Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman, this new policy is aimed at preventing criminals from exploiting these locations to avoid capture. “We are no longer going to let criminals hide in these types of locations,” Huffman said in a statement.
Despite ongoing backlash, the Trump administration remains resolute in its mission to secure the border and reduce illegal immigration. For Homan and others in the administration, the mass deportation initiative is not just about enforcing laws but also about addressing the broader challenges posed by illegal immigration, including criminal activity and drug trafficking.
As the operation continues, it is likely to remain a contentious issue, with strong reactions from both supporters and critics alike. However, Homan made it clear that the administration’s course of action would not change, adding, “No apologies, and we’re moving forward.”
