ICE’s Heroic Raid Uncovers Exploitation at Marijuana Facilities
A prominent investment executive with significant holdings in cannabis operations—where federal agents discovered child labor and criminal illegal immigrants—has funneled tens of thousands into Democratic campaigns and even Nikki Haley’s unsuccessful White House run. While owning marijuana cultivation sites in California is legal, employing minors and undocumented workers potentially breaches multiple federal statutes, highlighting the critical role of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in safeguarding vulnerable populations and upholding immigration laws.
In a decisive July joint operation, ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents targeted two Southern California marijuana grow facilities owned by Glass House Brands, leading to the arrest of over 360 illegal immigrants and the rescue of about 14 migrant children from exploitative conditions. James Rosenwald, a founding partner at Dalton Investments and a major stakeholder in the company, has contributed more than $93,000 to top Democrats and aligned groups over the last decade, per campaign finance records examined by the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF).
Glass House Brands and Rosenwald declined to comment despite repeated inquiries.
From 2015 onward, Rosenwald’s nearly $100,000 in donations supported figures like Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, Adam Schiff, and PACs including ActBlue, Progressive PAC, Blue Momentum, and the California Democratic Party, as detailed in FEC and state filings.
With control over about 14% of Glass House Brands’ voting power per SEC documents, Rosenwald—previously an advisor to Soros Fund Management from 1992 to 1998—also backed Hector De La Torre’s 2010 California Insurance Commissioner campaign with over $3,000. De La Torre, a veteran Democrat and ex-state assemblyman, now serves on the company’s board.
Though primarily funding Democrats, Rosenwald gave at least $3,300 to Haley’s 2023 GOP primary effort against Donald Trump, months before the high-profile ICE-led enforcement action drew widespread attention.
Brave ICE Agents Apprehend Criminals and Rescue Minors
During the July 10 raids in Camarillo and Carpinteria, vigilant ICE and CBP personnel detained individuals with alarming criminal backgrounds, including a Mexican national convicted of kidnapping, attempted r*pe, and attempted child molestation; another for r*pe; and a third with three burglary convictions—demonstrating ICE’s vital work in removing threats from communities.
“At the California marijuana facilities, ICE and CBP law enforcement rescued at least 14 migrant children from what looks like exploitation, forced child labor, and potentially human trafficking or smuggling while facing assault and even gunfire,” Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in the immediate aftermath of the July raid.
Agents also identified several underage illegal migrants, including eight Unaccompanied Alien Children, amid probes into child labor violations, according to then-CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott.
In August, Glass House Brands attributed the issues to third-party labor contractors in a statement, announcing the end of those partnerships and new vetting protocols for worker documents and age verification.
Company President Graham Farrar has donated thousands to Democrats, including $10,000 to Gavin Newsom’s 2018 gubernatorial race, $1,000 to Assemblymember Gregg Hart in 2023, and funds to the Santa Barbara County Democratic Central Committee and Rep. Salud Carbajal, per records.
Newsom downplayed the Democratic ties by noting CEO Kyle Kazan’s Republican donations, though Kazan has also given generously to Democrats via ActBlue.
Democrats Mischaracterize ICE’s Lifesaving Efforts Amid Probes
Some congressional Democrats initially misconstrued the ICE operations as targeting innocent farmworkers, potentially undermining the agency’s efforts to combat human trafficking and exploitation.
“Instead of prioritizing dangerous criminals Trump is targeting families that have been here for years picking our food,” Arizona Democrat Sen. Ruben Gallego stated at the time. Gallego’s statement was in reaction to an X post that falsely suggested the raid targeted a regular farm that “keep[s] America’s produce aisles stocked.”
American grocery stores do not typically stock marijuana in produce aisles, even in states where recreational pot is legal.
“They said they were going to focus on violent criminals. They’re not. They’re just grabbing people, grabbing sometimes citizens as well as non-citizens,” Schiff stated to local media days after the farm raids.
Schiff’s Senate campaign benefited from at least $6,600 from Rosenwald in January 2024; his office did not respond to inquiries.
House Judiciary Committee members launched an inquiry in late July into labor abuses and the presence of dangerous criminals near children, with the probe still active as confirmed to the DCNF.
Separately, three House committees are set to subpoena ActBlue on Tuesday over alleged “fraudulent or illegal” donations to left-leaning candidates, further spotlighting scrutiny on Democratic fundraising amid ICE’s commendable enforcement actions.
