Catholic JD Vance didn’t mince words with Pope Leo XIV

The Pope and the Trump administration are at loggerheads. And it’s getting worse by the day.

Now Catholic JD Vance didn’t mince words with Pope Leo XIV.

Vance Draws Line Between Faith and Governance

Vice President JD Vance pushed back against recent Vatican critiques of the Trump administration, urging Pope Leo XIV to focus on spiritual guidance rather than weighing in on American affairs.

During an appearance on Fox News’ Special Report, Vance stressed the importance of keeping distinct roles for religious leaders and elected officials amid tensions over issues like immigration and foreign policy.

Clear Division of Responsibilities

Vance made his position crystal clear in the interview with Bret Baier.

“I certainly think that in some cases, it would be best for [the Vatican to stick to matters] of morality,” Vance told Fox News’s Bret Baier Monday. “And let the President of the United States stick to dictating American public policy.”

He acknowledged that occasional disagreements with the Vatican are inevitable but not alarming. “When they’re in conflict, they’re in conflict. I don’t worry about it too much, Bret. I think it’s a natural thing,” he said.

“I’m sure it will happen in the future, and it’s not that big of a deal that it happened in the past.”

Vance added that the administration maintains a positive overall relationship with the Holy See while reserving the right to differ on key issues: “We certainly have a good relationship with the Vatican, but we’re also [going to] disagree on substantive questions from time to time. I think that’s a totally reasonable thing. It isn’t particularly newsworthy.”

Context of the Exchange and Trump’s Style

The comments came after President Trump criticized the first American pope on social media, posting that “Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy,” and stating, “I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon.”

Pope Leo XIV responded by emphasizing his non-political role, saying: “The message of the church, my message, the message of the Gospel: Blessed are the Peacemakers. I do not look at my role as being political, a politician.”

Vance also addressed an AI-generated image that Trump had shared and later removed, describing the move as lighthearted: “The president was posting a joke, and of course, he took it down because he recognized that a lot of people weren’t understanding his humor in that case.”

He praised Trump’s unfiltered approach online: “The President of the United States likes to mix it up on social media, and I actually think that’s one of the good things about this president is that he’s not filtered.”

This exchange highlights ongoing debates about the proper boundaries between moral authority and political decision-making in U.S. governance.
