And Trump was hit with a jail time threat by prosecutors for this outrageous reason.
Donald Trump has been thrust into countless trials. Most of them are civil cases where they don’t have to find criminal guilt.
It essentially is a way to leech money from Trump and gum up his days.
Trump has been able to weather these assaults, and his ability to fundraise from his loyal base has meant any attempt to bankrupt him has failed.
Now the Left wants to go in for the kill – throwing him in jail.
Trump has been charged with 34 counts of first-degree falsifying business documents in connection with alleged hush money payments made to Stormy Daniels during his successful 2016 presidential campaign.
Trump has been required to attend court on Tuesday and every day of the trial. Judge Juan Merchan informed Trump that if he fails to appear, a warrant for his arrest will be issued.
Trump pled not guilty on all allegations last year.
However, as Monday demonstrated, the criminal case against the former president remains hampered by concerns about Trump’s right to a fair trial.
96 prospective jurors were sworn in, but more than 50 of them were quickly discharged for acknowledging they could not serve as unbiased juries.
“It’s a scam. It’s a political witch hunt,” Trump said after court adjourned Monday.
Judge Juan Merchan, whom Trump has regularly blasted for being biased and favoring Democrats, addressed Trump personally before summoning the prospective jurors to the courtroom.
The court informed Trump that if he fails to appear, a warrant for his arrest will be issued. Judge Merchan also informed Trump that he has the right to be present at the trial, but that if he disturbs proceedings, he would be removed. Trump nodded after receiving the orders.
Judge Merchan dismissed Trump’s plea to be excused from the trial next Thursday, after he expressed a desire to attend Supreme Court arguments on presidential immunity. The judge has not yet decided if the trial would be postponed so that Trump can attend his son Barron’s high school graduation.
Before the jury selection began, Judge Merchan denied the defense’s plea to recuse himself.
Judge Merchan has also scheduled a hearing for next Tuesday, April 23, to examine potential punishment for Trump violating the gag order.
While Trump is stuck in court, Biden gets to run around on the campaign trail. Coincidence? We think not.
President Biden returned to the campaign trail on Tuesday, visiting his native hometown of Scranton to begin three days of campaigning in Pennsylvania.
Biden picked Scranton, a working-class city of approximately 75,000 people, to push his new tax package. His travels across Pennsylvania coincide with the beginning of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s criminal hush money prosecution against Trump.
Biden spent Tuesday night in Scranton before heading to Pittsburgh on Wednesday morning. He is set to make a brief visit to the White House before returning to Pennsylvania on Thursday for an event in Philadelphia.
Scranton, Biden’s first stop, combines the personal and political for Biden, who grew up in a three-story colonial home in the Green Ridge neighborhood. His family later relocated to Delaware, which Biden eventually represented in the United States Senate.
“It’s hard to draw paths to Biden winning the White House that don’t involve Pennsylvania,” said Daniel Hopkins, a political science professor at the University of Pennsylvania.
