One of the pages in their playbook is to deny wrongdoing or the existence of any scandal until it’s “too late” to do anything about it.
That’s what they did with the FBI’s collusion with social media giants like Twitter to influence the election in Joe Biden’s favor.
Not to be outdone, the bureaucrats over at the CDC have just been exposed for their own corruption.
After pressure from gun control campaigners, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) purportedly suppressed statistics on defensive firearms use in the United States.
According to data from a CDC-commissioned research, defensive firearms use occurs between 60,000 and 2.5 million times every year.
Following private meetings with gun control supporters in 2021, emails recovered and published by The Reload program revealed that references to the study were removed from the site.
“[T]hat 2.5 Million number needs to be killed, buried, dug up, killed again and buried again,” wrote Mark Bryant, executive director of the Gun Violence Archive, in one of the emails to the CDC.
“It is highly misleading, is used out of context and I honestly believe it has zero value — even as an outlier point in honest DGU discussions.”
“And while that very small study by Gary Kleck has been debunked repeatedly by everyone from all sides of this issue [even Kleck] it still remains canon by gun rights folks and their supporting politicians and is used as a blunt instrument against gun safety regulations every time there is a state or federal level hearing,” Bryant’s email continued.
“Put simply, in the time that study has been published as ‘a CDC Study’ gun violence prevention policy has ground to a halt, in no small part because of the misinformation that small study provided.”
Bryant was one of several gun control activists that met online with CDC officials about the findings. Senator Dick Durbin, D-Ill., is said to have brokered the encounter through his office.
According to the emails, CDC officials originally resisted eliminating the reference. Dr. Deb Houry, the CDC’s acting senior deputy director, stated that Bryant’s GVA reviewed only “a very small subset of people who have used guns defensively,” adding that it “does not include individuals who might have used guns defensively, but not reported this use to law enforcement.”
Houry explained that unless the person reported it to authorities, a case in which a person displayed a firearm to prevent a fight would not register under Bryant’s criteria.
Nonetheless, the CDC eventually agreed to Bryant’s request after an online conference with him and others on September 15, 2021, according to The Reload.
“We are planning to update the fact sheet in early 2022 after the release of some new data,” Beth Reimels, Associate Director for Policy, Partnerships, and Strategic Communication at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Violence Prevention, wrote in a follow-up email.
“We will also make some edits to the content we discussed that I think will address the concerns you and other partners have raised.”
The report noted the CDC did not speak with the study’s author, Florida State University emeritus professor Gary Kleck, before withdrawing his work.
“CDC is just aligning itself with the gun-control advocacy groups,” Kleck told the outlet. “It’s just saying: ‘We are their tool, and we will do their bidding.’ And that’s not what a government agency should do.”
