Megyn Kelly Slams CNN’s Catherine Rampell for Dismissing Pete Hegseth’s Military Service

On Wednesday’s edition of The Megyn Kelly Show, SiriusXM host Megyn Kelly strongly criticized CNN commentator Catherine Rampell, accusing her of belittling the military service of Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense. Kelly’s remarks came after a contentious Senate hearing on Tuesday, during which Hegseth faced intense scrutiny from Senate lawmakers, including questioning about his personal life.

Hegseth, a veteran of the Minnesota National Guard, has a distinguished record, having deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He was twice awarded the Bronze Star for his service. However, his nomination was not without controversy. Senate Democrats, including Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, delved into Hegseth’s past, raising issues such as allegations of infidelity, alcoholism, and abuse. Despite his military credentials, Hegseth faced a grilling that focused on personal matters rather than his qualifications for the role.

Kelly took particular issue with Rampell’s commentary on CNN, where the commentator downplayed Hegseth’s military experience. “In any event, CNN thought she’d be an adequate commentator. Why? But here she is telling us why Pete was chosen for this job.”

F*** you, Catherine Rampell, because that is denigrating his service,” Kelly fired back. “His service is the reason he got the job.”

Kelly made it clear that Hegseth’s nomination was driven by his extensive military background, not his media career. “It’s Pete’s lifetime of service while in the armed services and afterward working for veterans that got him this job. Perhaps Trump wouldn’t know about him if he hadn’t gotten a job on Fox. But that’s what opened the door, not what got him the job,” Kelly explained. She condemned Rampell’s criticism as indicative of the “elite” mindset that dismisses both military service and support for President Trump. “You’re so disrespectful and disgusting. But that is what the elite thinks of our military and certainly of any Trump supporter,” Kelly asserted.

Trump pointed to Hegseth’s deployment to multiple conflict zones and his leadership of veteran advocacy organizations, including Vets for Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America, as key factors in his selection. Earning the support from U.S. Senator Joni Ernst was a significant hurdle for Hegseth, not because her vote particularly mattered that much on its own. The Republicans do have a 53-seat majority in the U.S. Senate chamber, to be clear. What made her support important is that it closes the door on some other weak-kneed Republicans from derailing the Hegseth nomination.

On the political betting market website called Polymarket, Hegseth’s confirmation is 97% likely based on extrapolation from the betting trends. All of Donald Trump’s other controversial nominees, like Tulsi Gabbard and Robert Kennedy, have enjoyed improved odds of being confirmed with Republicans warming up to Hegseth’s nomination.

Donald Trump would be over the moon if he doesn’t have to deal with anymore drama on the front of filling out his cabinet. That way, he can get to work as soon as possible on his agenda that the American people overwhelmingly voted him in for.
