Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is calling out the Democratic Party for hiding President Biden’s health issues up until mid-2024, only to hastily replace him with Vice President Kamala Harris as their candidate just months before Election Day.
In a Thursday op-ed in his own publication, Bloomberg took a hard look at what led to Trump’s sweeping victory over Harris and why Democrats are now reeling.
He suggested the party should “ask themselves how exactly they lost to Trump,” whom he referred to as “an ailing 78-year-old who much of the country despises.”
“It probably wasn’t great to cover up President Joe Biden’s infirmities until they became undeniable on live TV,” Bloomberg pointed out.
He also criticized the move to substitute Biden with Harris, describing her as “a nominee who had received no electoral votes and had failed decisively in a previous presidential run.”
Biden, 81, formally ended his campaign in July after a dismal debate performance that raised serious questions about his ability to continue as a viable candidate.
However, well before his exit, public opinion polls were signaling that Americans had doubts about Biden’s age and stamina.
A survey by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs in August 2023 revealed that 77% of Americans considered Biden too old to effectively serve another term.
Following nudges from key Democrats like former President Barack Obama and ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Biden stepped aside on July 21, officially backing Harris and turning over his campaign infrastructure to her.
According to the New York Times, Bloomberg — despite his doubts — ultimately donated $50 million to a nonprofit backing Harris’s campaign, a far cry from his previous financial commitments to Democratic causes.
The billionaire businessman, who himself made a brief run for president in 2020, was initially hesitant to donate at all, given his reservations about Harris as a candidate.
The secrecy surrounding Bloomberg’s $50 million donation reportedly raised eyebrows among Democrats.
Before this, Bloomberg’s contributions had been modest compared to past election cycles.
He gave only $47 million toward congressional races, less than half of what he spent in 2018 when Democrats regained control of the House.
Bloomberg had previously donated over $250 million combined in 2018 and 2020 to block Trump’s rise and influence — a figure that doesn’t include the staggering $1.1 billion he spent on his own presidential campaign in 2020.
In 2020, Bloomberg poured $100 million into the Biden campaign’s efforts in Florida, a state Trump ended up winning comfortably.
This election cycle, Bloomberg held back until after Biden stepped down.
Only after Harris’s team personally met with him to discuss her economic and housing policies did he agree to contribute, according to the Times.
