A squadron of Russian Navy vessels landed in Cuba on Wednesday, a show of might from Moscow amid rising tensions between the United States and Russia.
The Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov, nuclear-powered submarine Kazan, a rescue tug, and an oil tanker entered Havana harbor after a ceremonial firing from the Gorshkov and an 18th-century colonial fort.
According to CNN, the warships are on a five-day official visit to Cuba to demonstrate Moscow-Havana cooperation.
While at the harbor, the Gorshkov will be open to the Cuban public for four hours per day for three days, according to CNN.
The United States does not believe the frigate is carrying nuclear weapons at this time, but who can be sure?
Tensions between Washington and Moscow have escalated in recent weeks due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The United States has provided billions of dollars in supplies, training, and weapons to the Ukrainian military.
Last month, the Biden administration overturned a crucial restriction prohibiting Ukrainian use of U.S. weaponry, permitting Ukraine to employ U.S. weapons in restricted circumstances on Russian territory.
“The president recently directed his team to ensure that Ukraine is able to use U.S.-supplied weapons for counter-fire purposes in the Kharkiv region, so Ukraine can hit back against Russian forces that are attacking them — or preparing to attack them,” a U.S. official at the time stated.
“Our policy with respect to prohibiting the use of ATACMS — or long range strikes inside of Russia — has not changed.”
Last Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin responded, warning that the policy change may result in “very serious problems.”
“That would mark their direct involvement in the war against the Russian Federation, and we reserve the right to act the same way,” Putin said.
To prevent the war and tensions between the U.S. and Russia from escalating, the U.S. earlier barred Ukraine from using U.S. weaponry on Russian territory.
Russian units have recently threatened Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-most populous city prior to the war.
Kharkiv is around 20 kilometers from the Russian border, giving Russia room to plan strikes on the city, which Ukraine had difficulty avoiding and combating.
U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has stated that he has “consistently argued” for the administration to give Ukraine more freedom with U.S. armaments.
“I think they should be allowed to hit the Russians in Russia,” McConnell stated last month.
