The biggest Kamala Harris and Joe Biden mistake is back to haunt them. They’re being brought to account.

On the third anniversary of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, former Navy SEAL and CIA contractor Shawn Ryan shared his insights with reporters, expressing deep concerns about the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of the situation. Ryan, who is now the host of the Shawn Ryan Show, believes that the administration has failed to learn from the disastrous operation that culminated in the deaths of 13 service-members in August 2021.

The Chaotic Withdrawal

Ryan argues that the Biden administration’s approach to Afghanistan remains fundamentally misguided. He warns that the country is once again becoming a breeding ground for terrorism, which could pose significant threats to the West in the future. “I personally don’t think any lessons have been learned. It obviously worked to sweep it under the rug and try to get it out of the media, which they did a really good job of, especially when it first happened,” Ryan stated.

He acknowledged that while former President Donald Trump negotiated the withdrawal with the Taliban in 2020, the Biden administration failed to adhere to the strict guidelines laid out in that agreement. “Yes, Trump did negotiate [the withdrawal] with the Taliban in 2020. But there were very strict guidelines laid out in that agreement, and none of those guidelines were followed,” Ryan emphasized.

Ryan further criticized the execution of the withdrawal, suggesting that if Trump had been in charge, he would have adhered to a more calculated plan. “I think that had Trump done it, I’m sure he would have followed the calculated plan that he and his cabinet came up with. But unfortunately, all the Biden administration did was give the word to pull out. There was nothing strategic about how it went down,” he explained.

The chaotic and abrupt nature of the withdrawal was highlighted in after-action reports from the State Department and House Foreign Affairs Committee, which indicated that the operation suffered from poor planning and a lack of leadership. Notably, no one in the Biden administration faced consequences for the withdrawal, which has left a lasting impact on U.S. credibility.

Military Equipment Left Behind

Ryan pointed out the staggering amount of military equipment left behind in Afghanistan — over $7 billion worth — now readily accessible to the Taliban. This has allowed the Taliban to impose authoritarian rule over the Afghan people. Despite the risks, Ryan noted that the U.S. continues to send tens of millions of dollars in assistance to Afghanistan each week, raising concerns about potential diversion or seizure by the Taliban. “Afghanistan has received almost $3 billion in U.S. taxpayer-funded assistance since the 2021 withdrawal,” he stated.

On August 14, the Taliban marked the third anniversary of the U.S. withdrawal with a demonstration showcasing left-behind military equipment at a former American airbase. This display underscores the growing influence of terrorist groups like Al Qaeda, which have begun to operate freely within Afghanistan.

Ryan believes that the resurgence of terrorism in Afghanistan should be a top priority for U.S. national security. “I definitely don’t think that threat is being dealt with appropriately. The terrorism threat from the Taliban and what’s going on inside of Afghanistan should be a top priority. I think it’s right up there with the Fentanyl crisis. It’s up there with some of the things that we’re dealing with in terms of China,” he warned. “We had pretty much cleaned terrorism out of the region, and now it’s sprung back up, as if we were never there.”

Leadership Accountability

While President Biden has stated that the “buck stops with [him]” regarding the withdrawal, Ryan has also scrutinized Vice President Kamala Harris’s role in the operation. Harris was reportedly the “last person in the room” during the planning process and advised Biden on key decisions. Ryan asserts that if she played a significant role in the planning, she must share in the blame. “If she had anything to do with the planning, then she’s at fault, and she is supposedly his top adviser, correct? So I’d say that blame certainly falls on her,” he said. “More broadly, actually, it probably falls on her more than him, because he’s completely incompetent in running the country, which means she should have been pulling some strings from behind the scenes.”

Ryan also expressed skepticism regarding Harris’s choice of running mate, Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who has faced criticism for allegedly exaggerating his military service. While the Harris campaign has maintained that Walz “misspoke” and did not intend to embellish his record, Ryan remains unconvinced. “I think it’s a shame that somebody that reached that high of a rank is not comfortable with their service and feels the need to over-embellish, or maybe even lie, about what they’ve done in service. He should just be proud of what he actually did, if anything at all,” Ryan remarked. “I’ve seen a lot of people exaggerate and lie about their careers in the military, about what they saw and what they did. When it comes to service, the truth always comes out. Nobody’s going to allow somebody to get away with lies.”

As the U.S. navigates a complex global landscape marked by ongoing wars in Europe and the Middle East, alongside a rivalry with a rapidly growing China, Ryan believes the next commander-in-chief will face significant challenges. He emphasizes the urgency of addressing the southern border and immigration crisis, which he considers one of the most pressing foreign concerns facing the nation today.

“I think we’re in for a bumpy ride, no matter who wins,” Ryan concluded. “But I do think if Trump wins, and some of these policies that he’s talking about start to take effect, I think we’ll start to see things turn around very quickly as these policies take effect.”

Ryan’s insights serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing repercussions of the Afghanistan withdrawal and the critical challenges that lie ahead for U.S. leadership in the realm of national security and foreign policy.
