President Biden handed the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Democratic mega-donor George Soros on Saturday, sparking outrage among critics who slammed the move as a “national disgrace.”
Soros, 94, was one of 19 honorees, a group that included U2 frontman Bono, actor Denzel Washington, and former Senator Hillary Clinton — whose inclusion also drew fierce backlash.
“George Soros spent millions electing soft-on-crime politicians that let criminals wreak havoc in our major cities,” Montana Senator Tim Sheehy told the New York Post. “Hillary Clinton abandoned our Navy SEALs in Libya.”
Sheehy didn’t hold back, adding, “Joe Biden’s decision to give Hillary Clinton and George Soros the Presidential Medal of Freedom is a national disgrace.”
Soros, unable to attend the ceremony, had the award accepted on his behalf by his son and political heir, Alex Soros.
The official citation praised Soros, stating, “Born into a Jewish family in Hungary, George Soros escaped Nazi occupation to build a life of freedom for himself and countless others around the world.”
Biden celebrated Soros’ contributions, declaring, “His inspiring generosity reminds us all of our capacity and our obligation to stand up to the abuse of power and to be guardians of democracy and all people yearning to be free.” He added, “I am grateful for the work you will inspire for generations to follow.”
Despite the White House’s glowing praise, Soros’ track record tells a different story. Worth over $7 billion, he has spent decades funding radical Left-wing initiatives like Defund the Police and groups such as Black Lives Matter. His Open Society Foundations, which has absorbed tens of billions from his fortune, is a driving force behind progressive projects worldwide and has backed far-Left district attorneys in cities grappling with skyrocketing crime rates.
Soros-supported prosecutors, including Manhattan’s Alvin Bragg, Chicago’s Kim Foxx, Los Angeles’ George Gascón, and Philadelphia’s Larry Krasner, have faced harsh criticism for advancing policies that prioritize so-called “criminal justice reform” over public safety, resulting in chaos and surging crime.
“The significant financial support of Mr. Soros and his Open Society for far-left woke criminal justice reform district attorney and mayoral candidates created havoc in the criminal justice system and significant rises in crime and disorder,” said former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton.
Former NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly took it further, asserting, “I cannot think of anyone who has done more to undermine the rule of law in this country than George Soros.”
Soros’ influence isn’t limited to criminal justice. He funneled over $175 million to Democrats during the 2022 midterms, with another $60 million spent on House and Senate Democrats and other Leftist causes in 2024. In 2020, he poured over $200 million into efforts to “dismantle systemic racism.”
Critics have also pointed to Soros’ role in exacerbating urban decay through “harm reduction” drug policies. In New York City, a Soros-funded nonprofit faced backlash for distributing free needles, crack pipes, and heroin “cooking” kits.
“Truly a sad day for America,” said New Jersey GOP Rep. Jeff Van Drew. “Communities all across our country will likely never recover from the damage George Soros and his radical left prosecutors have inflicted upon them.”
Soros has also been criticized for channeling millions to groups supporting anti-Israel protests on college campuses.
The decision to honor Soros even drew the ire of Elon Musk, who called it a “travesty” on his X account.
Hillary Clinton, 77, also stirred controversy with her award, coming nearly 12 years after her husband, Bill Clinton, received the same honor from President Barack Obama.
Clinton’s history includes an FBI probe into her use of a private email server while serving in the Obama administration — a scandal that ended without charges but left many Republicans fuming.
“Joe Biden is spending his final days in office asking, ‘How can I disgrace myself even more?’ And this is just the latest example. Hillary Clinton should have been prosecuted, not celebrated with the nation’s highest civilian honor,” said Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.).
Clinton received a standing ovation during the ceremony, where her citation highlighted her work on universal health care, women’s rights, and democracy as Secretary of State.
The event wasn’t without its share of awkward moments. Among the attendees was Biden’s scandal-plagued son, Hunter, who recently received sweeping clemency from his father after pleading guilty to felony tax evasion. He refused to answer questions from reporters.
Other recipients of the award included renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, soccer legend Lionel Messi, NBA icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.
According to the White House, the medal recognizes individuals who have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.”
For many, however, the inclusion of Soros and Clinton overshadowed the honor’s original intent, leaving critics questioning the Biden administration’s judgment once again.
