MSNBC host Joe Scarborough did not hold back in criticizing California’s leadership, blaming what he called a “complete failure of government” for the devastation caused by five wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles.
The fires left thousands of homes destroyed and at least ten people dead, exposing what Scarborough described as severe shortcomings in the state’s disaster preparedness.
Scarborough pointed to inadequate budgets and neglected infrastructure as key factors in the crisis.
He lamented the inability of Los Angeles officials to maintain basic resources, such as water-filled fire hydrants, which left firefighters ill-equipped to combat the blazes.
“We don’t know the exact causes for the complete failure of government to be able to protect these homes,” Scarborough said during his Friday broadcast.
“I don’t think we can say it’s the smelt alone. We don’t know what it is. But I do think it is going to be like Hurricane Katrina. I mean, the infrastructure has been slashed. You can’t just say it’s [Los Angeles Mayor] Karen Bass, you can’t just say it’s Gavin Newsom. This has been a trend for 30 years.”
Scarborough drew parallels to the catastrophic flooding of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, emphasizing how neglecting critical infrastructure has led to recurring disasters across the country.
“It’s just hard to hear people say in one of the richest cities in the world, ‘Oh, we don’t have enough water to protect people’s homes,’” he added.
A report by government transparency watchdog OpenTheBooks revealed that the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) failed to allocate sufficient funds for fire hydrants, even while receiving substantial taxpayer-funded salaries.
In many areas, dry hydrants rendered firefighters powerless to stop the infernos from spreading through hundreds of neighborhoods.
Criticism also targeted Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley, who allocated significant resources to internal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives instead of prioritizing emergency response preparedness.
The fires forced over 100,000 residents to evacuate their homes in areas such as Pacific Palisades and Eaton Canyon.
Many returned to find their neighborhoods reduced to ashes.
Survivors, speaking to the Daily Caller News Foundation, described being ordered to evacuate without warning, leaving them no time to save their belongings.
“I don’t believe it!” one emotional resident exclaimed when confronting the lack of preparedness by local and state officials.
While the fires raged, Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass was notably absent, having traveled to Ghana for the inauguration of Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama. Her absence sparked outrage among her constituents, with Sky News reporter David Blevins confronting her upon her return.
