President-elect Donald Trump reportedly took a sharp but humorous jab at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week, suggesting that if Canada couldn’t handle Trump’s tough new tariff plan, it might as well join the United States.
Trump, 78, delivered the quip during a three-hour dinner with Trudeau at his Mar-a-Lago estate on Friday.
The meeting came in response to Trump’s proposed 25% tariff on Canadian imports — a bold move aimed at prioritizing American workers and addressing trade imbalances.
At the Palm Beach, Florida dinner, Trudeau, 52, pleaded with Trump to reconsider the tariff, warning that it could “k*ll” Canada’s economy, according to Fox News.
“So your country can’t survive unless it’s ripping off the US to the tune of $100 billion?” Trump reportedly shot back, referencing the massive trade deficit with Canada.
The president-elect then jokingly floated the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state, with Trudeau serving as its governor.
However, in classic Trump fashion, he conceded that “prime minister” was a better title for Trudeau than “governor.”
While Trudeau and others at the table laughed nervously at the remark, Trump didn’t stop there. When someone at the dinner pointed out that Canada would be a “very liberal state,” Trump suggested splitting it into two states — one liberal and one conservative.
Such a move, no doubt, would balance Canada’s ideological leanings under the MAGA vision of fairness and strength.
Last month, Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on Canadian goods unless the country took serious steps to combat illegal immigration and drug smuggling, both of which he has long argued weaken U.S. interests.
At the dinner, Trump reiterated these demands, making it clear that America’s northern neighbor needed to act swiftly.
He set Jan. 20 — Inauguration Day — as the deadline for Canada to implement significant changes.
Describing the dinner as “very productive,” Trump took to Truth Social on Saturday to emphasize the importance of the discussions.
“America First means serious conversations with our neighbors, and that’s exactly what we had,” he wrote.
The Trump transition team has not yet responded to media inquiries for further comment, but one thing is certain:
