Texas Republicans Demand Citizenship Data from Biden-Harris Administration
A coalition of Texas Republicans, led by Representatives Randy Weber and Chip Roy, has taken a firm stand against the Biden-Harris administration for its failure to provide requested citizenship data related to voter registration. On Wednesday, the lawmakers released a letter directed to Ur Jaddou, the Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), urging compliance with a request made by Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson.
This request aims to verify that non-citizens are not being improperly registered to vote. The impetus for the letter follows Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s decision in August to purge 6,500 potential non-citizens from the voter rolls. In the letter, the lawmakers argue that Jaddou has a “moral imperative to assist the state” in clarifying registration data, given the importance of maintaining election integrity.
Originally, Nelson set a deadline of October 2 for the federal government to respond, but as of now, no reply has been received.
“Public confidence in elections is a necessary cornerstone of any representative government,” Roy stated. “That confidence must be earned through diligence and transparency.”
Weber criticized the administration’s lack of response, calling it a “clear dereliction of duty.” The letter highlights that the current administration has “consistently dismissed” concerns regarding non-citizen voting, asserting that existing laws to prevent such voting are effective. However, the lawmakers argue that the Biden administration is “preventing” states like Texas from enforcing these laws by withholding the requested citizenship data.
The situation is further complicated by a recent lawsuit filed by the Biden-Harris administration against Alabama for its efforts to remove non-citizens from voter rolls. This is not the first instance of states having to take legal action for access to citizenship verification data; Florida had to sue the Department of Homeland Security in 2012 for similar reasons.
“They’re turning a blind eye to noncitizens influencing our elections, and they even killed the SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) Act, which would have barred noncitizens from voting,” Weber remarked. “Federal law prohibits noncitizens from voting, so why don’t they hand over the voter rolls Texas needs to keep our elections clean? My Texas Republican colleagues and I demand they release the information without delay.”

Roy also emphasized the need for measures to prevent non-citizen voting, noting his sponsorship of the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voter registration. Although the Act passed narrowly in the House in July, it has yet to be voted on in the Senate.
Speaker Mike Johnson had previously attached the SAVE Act to a funding bill in September, but it ultimately failed in the House due to opposition from some Republican members who raised fiscal concerns. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries labeled the bill “unserious and unacceptable,” and President Joe Biden indicated he would veto it if it reached his desk.
“Texas has a duty to prevent noncitizens from voting,” Roy concluded. “The Biden-Harris administration is trying to prevent that for the same reason they fought the SAVE Act (H.R. 8281): they want noncitizens — especially illegal aliens — to vote.”
The letter was cosigned by 12 other Texas Republican Representatives, including Lance Gooden, August Pfluger, Ronny Jackson, Troy Nehls, John Carter, Beth Van Duyne, Pete Sessions, Brian Babin, Keith Self, Wesley Hunt, Pat Fallon, and Morgan Luttrell.
