President-elect Donald Trump scored a groundbreaking victory in a historically Democratic stronghold along the border, a county with a 97% Hispanic population, shattering a Democratic winning streak that dated back to 1896.
The shift was clear by Wednesday morning, with Trump capturing Starr County with over 57% of the vote — the first time a Republican has taken this border community in 128 years.
This win reflects Trump’s growing popularity among Latino voters, particularly Latino men, who are increasingly aligning with his firm stance on border security and illegal immigration.
Exit polls indicate that while Harris won about 53% of the overall Latino vote in Texas, a notable 54% of Latino men sided with Trump — a major swing from just 36% in 2020.
Harris also struggled to hold onto Latino women, with only 61% supporting her, down by 8 points from Biden’s performance in 2020.
Trump’s support among Latino voters nationwide has surged since 2020, with an 8-point rise among men and a 6-point gain with women, according to Fox News Voter Analysis exit polling.
Starr County, a community of nearly 66,000 people, had been a Democratic bastion for decades, with Biden winning it with 52% in 2020 and Hillary Clinton securing a massive 79% in 2016.
Despite being located in a red state, Starr County has held the longest Democratic voting streak in the nation, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
Trump’s appeal isn’t limited to Starr County.
He’s on track to capture Cameron, Hidalgo, and Webb counties, all Democratic-leaning South Texas districts that Clinton and Biden won by double digits.
Adding to the GOP wave, Republican Representatives Monica De La Cruz and Tony Gonzales clinched solid victories in these districts, delivering a stinging defeat to Democrats who had expected competitive races.
This seismic shift in South Texas comes as border security and illegal immigration have surged to the forefront of American concerns under President Joe Biden.
After Biden’s administration ended the Trump-era Title 42 last year, over a million people flooded the southern border in a matter of months, creating a massive strain on Texas and beyond.
Governor Greg Abbott responded by bussing thousands of migrants to sanctuary cities nationwide.
Trump has made securing the border a central pillar of his campaign, vowing to prioritize it as president and pledging to deport millions of undocumented immigrants when he reclaims the White House.
