Madison Cawthorn is back in trouble. The disgraced former North Carolina congressman was arrested early Wednesday in Cape Coral, Florida — just as he was making noise about running for office again. The 28-year-old skipped a court hearing tied to a citation for driving without a valid license, according to GulfCoastNewsNow.

His team brushed off the arrest, saying it was a minor oversight. “Madison keeps a very busy schedule and, due to a scheduling misunderstanding, did not appear in court this morning,” his reps claimed. He was booked on a $2,000 bond and quickly released.

A Scandal-Filled Term Cut Short

Cawthorn’s downfall in Washington was as fast as it was messy. Elected at 25, he became the youngest Republican in Congress — but his single term representing North Carolina’s 11th District quickly unraveled.

His time in office was defined by headline-grabbing antics rather than legislative work.

He accused fellow lawmakers of inviting him to cocaine-fueled parties, was repeatedly stopped for driving with a revoked license, and faced questions over insider trading tied to a cryptocurrency scheme.

Even Republican leadership had enough: House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy publicly rebuked him, and GOP donors abandoned him.

By May 2022, Cawthorn’s own party revolted. He lost his primary to state senator Chuck Edwards, ending his short-lived congressional career in a landslide of self-inflicted scandals. Humiliated, he left North Carolina for Florida, nursing grudges and promising revenge.

A Risky Florida Gamble

Now, Cawthorn is eyeing Florida’s 19th District — one of the state’s safest Republican seats — as a way back into Congress, Axios reported.

But his reputation precedes him. In 2024, he was accused of tailgating a woman and rear-ending a Florida Highway Patrol officer in Collier County. While he dodged serious charges, the incident added to his record of reckless behavior.

Partially paralyzed from a car accident at age 18, Cawthorn has long cast himself as a fighter.

But critics say his pattern of scandals, arrests, and stunts shows he is more interested in attention than public service.

For many in the GOP, his comeback bid looks less like redemption and more like déjà vu — a return of the chaos they thought they had left behind.
